  1. Eng 12-1published at 8 overs

    Ishant 1-1 from 4

Ishant's hair is back in order again and he is on the money with the ball once more, nipping one back between Cook's bat and pad in the early 80's-mph. An impressive return for the rangy paceman.

William Bolitho: Whats the fastest someone's been dropped after a century on debut?

Nick: Keaton, knowing I'm tired, kindly got out so I could go to sleep. Top bloke. Goodnight all.

Ketan Patel: The way England view Kohli is how I view Root. No flaw in his technique and scores quickly. Nightmare to bowl to!

  3. Eng 12-1published at 7 overs

    Cook 6, Root 4

Yadav continues, up at 91mph, but Root, who was practising in the road this week when the nets were unavailable because of the cyclone, is up on his toes and perfectly over the top of the ball to stylishly cut the first boundary of the match.

Andre Nel probably holds the record for quickest wicket after getting married, as he got married on the Saturday of a Test match.

  5. Eng 7-1published at 6 overs

Key man Joe Root comes in early again, he has 397 runs in the series so far, comfortably the most by an England batsman. The first wicket in married life for Ishant, who tied the knot with basketball player Pratima Singh last week.

Credit to the bowler for teasing him with a wide ball but when he gets back to the pavilion he will think that wasn’t the greatest shot he could have played.

Nick: No matter how tough it is on the field for Cook, it's nowhere near as hard as not seeing your newborn. Massive respect for him.

Simon Cashman: Advantage of living in USA..cricket starts at 11pm! Something comforting watching cricket when you've 8 inches of snow outside.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.2 overs

    Jennings c Parthiv b Ishant 1 (Eng 7-1)

It was very wide, Jennings went after it and got a routine edge through to the keeper. All over in this innings for the Durham left-hander and his Test scores are now 112, 0 and 1.

  9. Eng 7-0published at 5 overs

This pair compiled 99 in their first partnership together in Mumbai last week and both calmly collect singles from Yadav.

From what I've seen so far, you're glad you're batting and not fielding. It hasn't swung or seamed.

  11. Eng 5-0published at 4 overs

    Cook 4, Jennings 0

Sharma's neat hair has already become a little untangled in the early morning humidity but just the single is conceded in his second over, an inside edge from Cook that flies safely to fine-leg when on another day it might have crashed into the stumps.

  13. Eng 4-0published at 3 overs

Still evidence of the cyclone with some torn canvas tops on the large, separate two tiered stands that surround this stadium, which hosted its first Test in 1934. Another maiden as Keaton Jennings, after a century and a first-baller in his first Test, keeps out Yadav watchfully.

Guy D'Oyly: Although the series is gone, would love to see us end their unbeaten steak. All to play for.

Simon Cashman:  Advantage of living in USA ... cricket starts at 11pm! Something comforting watching cricket when you have 8 inches of snow outside.

Nick: Up at 3:30am to watch a dead rubber? Worth it to see Keaton bat.

  15. Eng 4-0published at 2 overs

    Cook 3, Jennings 0

Ishant Sharma's flowing locks are scraped back into a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-style pony tail as he returns for his first Test since August with a maiden.

Alastair Cook is the 10th man to reach 11,000 Test runs, and the youngest at 31 - quite a way younger than Sachin Tendulkar - although the quickest in terms of matches is Brian Lara.

  17. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

The bearded Umesh Yadav, with elasticated grips on both elbows, begins proceedings and Cook reaches the 11,000-run landmark with a two off the first ball of the match as Mishra misfields in the covers and appears to twist his knee in the damp outfield, but after some rueful flexing he is able to continue.

  18. 'The pitch is key'published at 04:02 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott

The key to it is the pitch. We thought we'd have a dry pitch. But when you've had a cyclone, it changes. The rain's going to go somewhere and seep underneath the covers, which is why the ground staff have been desperately trying to dry it out. It must have also stopped them rolling it for three days, so is it going to start well and then deteriorate more quickly?
