A rare sight. Ravi Jadeja removes his shades, inspects them, then pops his tinted windows back on his nose. Twinkling run-up, Root still going through his array of sweep shots to nail the mid-wicket defence. Root's got more sweeps than Dale Winton's supermarket.

They haven't let Mishra settle yet and have scored quite freely off him. There is turn but it's slow turn and you've got to be bang on a length. If we were in Mumbai the score would be about 180 so they have done very well.

Still Mishra. When it comes to ranking the three frontline spinners in this India side, he finishes fourth. Floppy, thinning hair, fullish beard, a habit of bowling full tosses. He gets away with one that Root can only swat for a single.

As a boy I went with my dad to every match until the day his cricket clashed with England's QF v West Germany - I stayed at my gran's to watch the match on her colour TV. My Dad scored his one and only 100 that day.

It's hot out there, with some suggesting it could be the hottest day of the series so far. I'm pretty sure I've just seen a praying mantis crying his eyes out. An eager Moeen Ali is sent back by Joe Root, with Ravi Jadeja finding some vicious turn past the edge of Root's bat. After a sleepy morning, this has been an entertaining afternoon.

Rather wonderfully, TMS is now coming across the airwaves via a phone line. It's a bit like an old-school football commentary from somewhere in eastern Europe. Frankly, I prefer it. Amit Mishra's leg-breaks are called into the action. As TMS is able to hang up the phone and come back to us in quality, Moeen celebrates by lofting over the leg side for four. It seems like an apt time for a drink, especially well-earned by those in the commentary box.

Had a six week tour of Australia planned for the 2010/11 Ashes tour which would have included the Melbourne and Sydney Test matches. Instead got the wife pregnant and watched at home doing the night feeds with my daughter.

Ashwin has a towel in the waistband of his trousers and luminous yellow on the bottom of his spikes. Root, who also favours a towel (who started this towel business? AB de Villiers?) sweeps fine with all the delicacy of a man cleaning a Faberge egg. Moeen, more butcher than surgeon, hammers his own version in front of square for four.

The TMS team are battling heroically against some technical problems in Chennai. When the line occasionally drops, Kevin Howells is on hand in Salford to pick up the baton. Still Umesh Yadav, finding a hint of reverse swing when he goes full. That doesn't stop him from testing Moeen's ticker with a bumper that is unconvincingly hooked for a couple.

Still Ashwin, still tormenting Moeen, who deserves great credit for sticking in there despite some torrid treatment at times today. At the other end, Joe Root is playing a different game, going to the well once more for a firmly struck sweep behind square for four.

I turned down an ODI ticket from my dad on 30 August 2016 at Trent Bridge - I was in an interim role and due to hand back across - it was changed to a day later about a week before and I said "nah forget about it - maybe another time" world record ODI score and a Hales 174 happened. I received multiple text messages telling me how good it was...

Umesh Yadav has long bandages on both arms and suncream painted on his face in the style of the Ultimate Warrior. Like against the spinners, Moeen looks less assured than Root, twice playing and missing outside the off stump before finally stabbing to third man for a single.

In early 2005 an American colleague and Aussie fan bought tickets for the last day of the Oval Test. Oh how we laughed, dead rubber, no chance it would go to five days and probably wet! Best decision he ever made even though we had the last laugh.

I've lost track on our quest for a cloudless series, but there's not much sign of white stuff overhead in Chennai. The pitch is a beige colour, while the outfield is about as green as it comes in this part of the world. Joe Root is light on his feet to dance and work Ashwin.

England need more than a half century from Joe Root today, they need 150 maybe 200. They've got first use of the wicket and they need to capitalise on that.

  20. Eng 109-2published at 40 overs

Pace bowler Umesh Yadav comes back into the attack. He was the bowler when Joe Root edged through a vacant slip when on only nine. Moeen Ali had a life too, dropped on nought. Now he's driving uppishly through the covers for three. It's been charmed stuff from Moeen, charming from Root.
