    Moeen 60, Bairstow 0

Root even had a little grin on his face when the review was called for, the smile of a man who thought he had nothing to worry about. Remember, Root was given not out on the field, so the third umpire needed conclusive evidence to overturn. Does a spike of noise count as conclusive? Decide for yourself.

In terms of runs per calendar year, Joe Root is 10 short of catching Michael Vaughan's record of 1,481, Jonny Bairstow needs 62 in this innings to pass Vaughan.

It's difficult to hold back and he played splendidly but he's lifted their spirits and given them an opportunity just before tea to get someone else out. As I always say, add two wickets to the score and they are going to be going into tea cock-a-hoop.

When I say Parthiv Patel barely appealed, I mean he didn't appeal. If anything, he was looking to take the bails off. Only when Kohli ran past him like a make sprinting for a bus did he think about the catch. Did Root hit the ground? The spike of noise came when the bat was in the air, which led Oxenford to think it was bat on ball. Conclusion? Not sure. Which makes you wonder how Oxenford could have been certain. Jonny Bairstow the new man.

Joe Root 88 from 144 balls, but in the last 10 times he's got to 75, seven of them he has got out before 90.

    Root c Parthiv b Jadeja 88 (Eng 167-3)

I can tell you now we've not heard the end of this one. Joe Root is given and is absolutely livid. He is chuntering as he stomps off, kicking at the boundary. Third umpire Bruce Oxenford decides that the spike of noise can be nothing other than bat on ball. It was full, wide, with the supposed under edge very well taken by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who barely appealed. Big, big moment.

    Eng 167-2

The replays are getting the crowd excited. Jadeja the bowler, Root trying to fetch from a long way outside off stump. Root might be in trouble here...

It was quite an exotic shot. There is a squiggle but is that bat hitting turf or ball?

  9. India reviewpublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2016

    Eng 167-2

Like rats in the city, you know you're never too far away from an India review. Sweep by Root, appeal for caught behind. Not given, but Kohli thinks there might be an edge...

This is going along spiffingly for England at the moment but one has to be mindful of the collapses of recent months.

  11. Eng 165-2published at 54 overs

    Root 87, Moeen 57

Mishra, the squat leggie, is round the wicket to Moeen, varying his pace with a round arm. When he goes past the outside edge, there's a strangled appeal for caught behind, with India someone controlling themselves and not asking for a review. Maiden over, the best Mishra has bowled by miles.

Was holidaying in South Africa this January and decided to have a surfing lesson on the second morning of the Cape Town Test. I arrived to the ground as Stokes was walking off for 258...!

Hello, where's the sun gone? It's behind a cloud for the first time in living memory. It's only a brief respite, soon back out and burning the players, with Moeen Ali's sweat-soaked shirt clinging to his back. Tidy over from Jadeja, just a couple of singles from it.

Jadeja bowled two or three peaches to Joe Root, who is well set, which could have been a double wicket maiden and just before lunch Ashwin bowled a beautiful over to Moeen, but since then it has seemed to go to sleep. Mishra is not as confident a bowler and they are going after him.

    Root 86, Moeen 56

This is the last time I'm going to ask if you're just waking up because, frankly, if you're alarm hasn't gone off by now, the chances are you don't have to be anywhere too early today. England lost both openers cheaply after winning the toss, but Joe Root and Moeen Ali have put them on top. Since lunch they have bumped along at more than four an over. Moeen is even playing reverse-sweeps with the back of the bat and lofts over mid-off off Amit Mishra. Virat Kohli looks murderous.

This Moeen innings is very similar to one in Mumbai because he struggled in that too. There he played a big shot and got out but can he go on today? You feel while Ashwin is out of the attack that life is a bit simpler and it is easier to score.

Well batted, Moeen Ali. Earlier today he was like a man fumbling in the dark for his lost car keys. Now, though perhaps not entirely assured, he's reached a 10th Test fifty. Since lunch he's looked much better. A single down the ground off Jadeja, a raise of the bat towards the dressing room, a punch of the gloves with Joe Root.

India are in retreat now. There are gaps for England to exploit. It's been around this time, when they have been on top, that England have thrown it away during this series. Lovely, flowing cover drive by Moeen off Mishra, past mid-off's right for four. He's one from a half-century.

I had a ticket for the opening day at Edgbaston last year, the day Australia were bowled out for 136, remember? Instead I was crawling around the M25 as my eldest daughter had been kicked out of her flat and Daddy had to go to the rescue. Yes it still rankles and yes it still gets mentioned.
