The second stride was going to take him over the rope so he flicked it back but there was no fielder to take the catch. They took three and three were saved.

    Rashid 32, Bairstow 46

Brilliant. From both Jonny Bairstow and George Dockrell. The batsman dispatches a superb four away to a full ball off the back foot. Dockrell then shines by catching a pull shot over the rope before throwing the ball back in mid-air to save three runs from what looked a certain six. It only delays the assault, though, as Rashid adds back-to-back boundaries. Very good over for England.

Psychologically any total under 300 will be seen as a very good day's work by Ireland. At the halfway stage 155-2, one was thinking of 330-340 but they have pulled back well.

  4. Eng 277-5published at 47 overs

These two are swinging hard now. Clever initial bowling from Tim Murtagh prevents them fully capitalising, but he veers slightly to leg with his fifth ball and Bairstow whips it away to the rope.

Murtagh ends with a very respectable 1-50 from his 10.

It has been totally different body language from Ireland than we saw at Bristol a few days ago.

Niall O'Brien looks as surprised as anyone as Peter Chase gets one to rise sharply past the nose of Adil Rashid. Where did that come from? The Ireland seamer varies it up with a slower ball that dips past the swinging bat of the Yorkshire player. Clever.

Rashid clubs the next ball away for two, making it five from a very good over for Ireland.

Barry McCarthy has brought fresh energy to the team and has bowled well here today.

Sam Billings made a promising start with this drive...

...but shortly after he was out, trying and failing to find the boundary.

  9. Eng 262-5published at 45 overs

A top quality flick off his legs from Rashid capitalises on a full McCarthy ball on leg stump. Bairstow adds to it with a punch down the ground for two - one of three doubles in an over that goes for 12. The march to 300 continues.

I thought they might have brought Willey in to exploit those short boundaries.

There have been six one-over spells bowled by Ireland in this innings. Also this is the highest Adil Rashid has batted, number seven, only the third innings in his last 18 ODIs.

  12. Eng 250-5published at 44 overs

Bairstow gets stuck into Dockrell with a cut for four and a swipe for just a single. More polite applause greets the England 250, brought up by Rashid's prod for one.

  14. Eng 241-5published at 43 overs

    Rashid 6, Bairstow 20

Murtagh returns, looking to finish off what has been a very efficient contribution so far. Rashid uses his outside edge to good effect, though, beating the diving fielder at third man at bring a boundary after he and Bairstow had shared a couple of singles. Bairstow ends a good over with a clever guided shot inside backward point for another four.

Adil Rashid is the new man. Can he provide the impetus England need to push towards 300?

If you were to hit it to anyone in the deep, Ireland would want it to be Kevin O'Brien, who made it all look very comfortable even coming out of that dark background. A very good period for Ireland.

    Billings c K O'Brien b Dockrell 7 (Eng 229-5)

Credit to Ireland. They have hung in, kept it tight and forced errors from England. Billings tries to beat the man in the deep with a lofted shot off Dockrell but sends the ball straight down the throat of Kevin O'Brien.

Neither Joe Root or Eoin Morgan will be very impressed with their dismissals having done so much hard work.  Root's shot to mid-off left an easy catch for Andy Balbirnie...

...while Ed Joyce's diving effort was a bit more impressive as he ended Morgan's innings.

  19. Eng 225-4published at 41 overs

Here we go. Billings bursts through the field with a flashing drive off the returning Chase for four. Only some good hands from the man at point prevents Bairstow adding to it. M'colleague jamie Lillywhite has just dished out the cakes. Fuel to see us through this final burst.

It is a different vibe at Lord's, where the good stuff is still being poured out to the members.
