Big shout for lbw as Bairstow goes down to try and sweep Dockrell. Nothing doing. Well, we're not getting the boundary-fest we expected. These two are more than capable, though. And we are into the danger zone right now. Goose, it's time to buzz the tower.

I couldn't believe that on an official MCC scorecard, at the Home of Cricket, the asterisk for the captain and the dagger-like symbol for the wicketkeeper are the wrong way round.

Sam Billings is the new man, joining fellow wicket-keeper batsman Bairstow in the middle. It takes him four balls to get away, which he manages with a prod down the ground for a single. Bairstow adds another run to keep strike.

Brilliant catch and a good bit of bowling from Barry McCarthy, he came wide of the crease and just rolled the fingers on it which caused Eoin Morgan to be in two minds. Two new batsmen who would like to be in the side and who know this is their opportunity are now at the crease.

    Morgan c Joyce b McCarthy 76 (Eng 213-3)

This isn't going how England thought. Ireland throw in another spanner to what was once a relentless home march to 350. Morgan, like Root before him, falls foul of an attempt to accelerate as he misjudges a drive to off and is caught low down by the diving Joyce. McCarthy has his second wicket.

  8. Eng 213-3published at 38 overs

    Morgan 76, Bairstow 8

Paul Farbrace and Trevor Bayliss look content, sat side by side up on the England balcony, like an anti-Waldorf and Statler. Meanwhile, out in the middle, England's progress has definitely been halted by the Root wicket. Six runs off the over. Calm before the storm.

I'm still staggered by Jonny Bairstow only playing 25 ODIs. You can see from the short time he's been in that he's very organised but once Buttler and Stokes are back, will he have a place in the side?

  11. Eng 207-3published at 37 overs

Bairstow is into his stride quickly. He gets bang on top of the bounce from a Murtagh delivery and punches down the ground for four. No let-up for Ireland, who have traded one efficient run-scorer for another. It doesn't get much less daunting further down the order, either.

    Bairstow 1, Morgan 72

Jonny Bairstow replaces Yorkshire colleague Root. He is a man in form, having scored a 113-ball 174 for his county in the Royal London One-Day Cup recently.

He is off the mark with a whip to leg for a single.

Slightly odd shot there from Root. I get he is acclerating the scoring but he is almost trying to do too much, opening the face.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 35.2 overs

    Root c Balbirnie b Chase 73 (Eng 200-3)

Out of nowhere. Ireland make a much, much, much-needed breakthrough as Root - looking to accelerate further - takes a stride and drives Chase straight to Andy Balbirnie at mid-off. England remain on course for a big total but that may well just halt their progress in the short-term.

  15. Eng 200-2published at 35 overs

Tim Murtagh - the one stand-out bowler for Ireland in this game - returns to the attack with his side on their knees. 1-16 off six was his opening effort and he is again tidy but the breakthrough looks just as unlikely as England stride confidently to 200, greeted with more polite applause. You get the sense everyone is merely waiting now for the fireworks to come in the last 10.

That was the least threatening bouncer I think I've seen in international one-day cricket! The England team going along very nicely at the moment.

  17. drinks break

    Eng 193-2published at 34 overs

Brilliant from Root. He has time to light a cigarette, take a few drags and gently stub it out under his heel before rocking back to an O'Brien short ball and cutting behind square for four.

Niall O'Brien offers some encouragement to his younger brother from behind the stumps but Morgan stomps all over the moment by smashing the following ball down the ground for four before pulling a fading, dipping, given-up-on-life bouncer for another boundary.

    That's drinks.

All too easy for Joe Root, he's looked in no trouble whatsoever. He looks set for a big score. He and Morgan are putting together what you suppose will be a match-winning partnership.

    Morgan 62, Root 62

Root has eased his foot down on the accelerator, looking to be more aggressive. He swings hard at McCarthy but this time fails to beat the man on the edge. Morgan tries to match his colleague, dancing down but failing to connect with an attempted flat-bat slap through off. These two are matching each other run for run.
