This Lord's crowd have yet to find a real voice. They favour the more civil applause to greet England boundaries. Root gives them two opportunities to get their hands together with a couple of rope-hitters off Stirling - the first puncturing the off-side field, the second a big pull from a short ball. Both are done with typical minimum fuss.

Me and my brother Edward are sipping two beers on the rooftops in Marrakesh whilst looking out at the snow-capped Atlas mountains. Raising a glass to every England boundary. The dream.

Barry McCarthy, built like an action man, but with floppier hair, charges in for his sixth over. He picked up the wicket of Jason Roy earlier but he poses zero threat to Morgan and Root, who work him around for a couple of singles and a two.

  4. Luck of the Irish for Morganpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 7 May 2017

Some good fortune here for Eoin Morgan as the ball hits his stumps but doesn't dislodge the bails.

  5. Eng 161-2published at 30 overs

    Morgan 56, Root 51

Jonny Bairstow looks very relaxed up on the England balcony. He clearly doesn't expect to be drawn into action anytime soon. Eoin Morgan underlines such confidence with a flourishing drive for four down the ground off Kevin O'Brien.

Straightaway this morning I thought 320 would be a good score and I stand by it. A good pitch and small boundaries.

50 for Root and Morganpublished at 29 overs

    Eng 154-2

It is a minor victory for Joe Root, who beats Eoin Morgan to 50 by one ball. Both are brought up with a single off Dockrell.

England are completely in charge of this game.

Apart from that one that dribbled back to hit the stumps of Morgan it has been relatively stress free for England.

  9. Eng 150-2published at 28 overs

    Morgan 47, Root 48

Ireland's bowling rotation continues with the return of Kevin O'Brien. It is very gentle seam from the ginger gent but on a decent line and length and keeps Root in check until the final ball, which is wide and short and cut away with authority by the England Test skipper. The 150 is up.

Joe Root has just recorded his 250th one-day two. Only one more batsman since Root began playing international cricket has scored more twos and that's Kohli.

  11. Eng 145-2published at 27 overs

George Dockrell is back into the attack as Ireland search for something, anything, to get a foothold in this game. It is business as usual, though, for England, with a bit of artistry thrown in by Root, who drops to one knee and ramps a ball over the wicketkeeper for four. Root is a master at that. I would have broken half my face.

Unlike Ireland at Bristol, everything that Root and Morgan are doing is with a vertical bat.

Cheers Jamie. I join you with the sun now shining down on Lord's. Summer is coming folks, get your collapsible chairs with complementary drinks slot ready.

England are set for a big 'un here. Morgan and Root continue to work Stirling around the ground to keep the runs coming. No threat to either of them.

  14. Eng 131-2published at 25 overs

    Root 36, Morgan 40

A few sea shanties with indistinct melody ring out from a section of the crowd who may well have succumbed before the sun was over the yardarm and Root ends a run of 28 balls without an England boundary with a lofted clip down the ground off Chase. Easy to spot the sun over the yardarm now, it looks a lot more like the Lord's we all know and love, and here's Phil Dawkes to describe the rest of the innings.

George Dockrell took a wicket in his second over in Bangalore in the World Cup game against England in 2011 but since then he has gone 0-200 against them.

  16. Eng 125-2published at 24 overs

    Root 31, Morgan 39

Dockrell did not impress with his three overs for 24, but Ireland turn to spin again, in the short, stout form of Paul Stirling. Morgan plays back to one, it goes into his pad and trickles back, actually making contact with the stumps, but does not dislodge the bails. A moment of fortune for the England captain on 39.

It is about pride for Ireland. There are a lot of fans here today. They may not get a victory but they need a performance.

Chase, after four costly overs for 32, knocks Morgan over with a bouncer. It is not exactly Michael Holding-esque, at 81mph, but it veers in to the left-hander awkwardly and over he goes in his attempts to avoid it.

There is a bit more energy about Ireland in the field today, which is pleasing to see. There have been some clean stops. But these two English batsmen seem set now.

  20. Eng 118-2published at 22 overs

    Root 28, Morgan 35

Root is struck on the inside of the thigh, no padding there, much to his chagrin, by McCarthy but the England run machine then drives fluently through the covers to collect two more. Two more runs, that is. A helicopter providing, as you might expect, overhead pictures, whirs away in the effects microphones.
