It's some really mixed stuff from Gary Ballance. Occasionally it looks like his front pad will get in the way of his bat, then he plays nicely through the covers, now he's cutting at Rabada when the ball is so wide he'd need a fishing rod to reach it. End of the first hour. Time for a drink.

West Indies are having a torrid time in the Women's World Cup and it's not got any better for them today. They are 64-5 against New Zealand in Taunton. You can follow updates via our scorecard here.

I've had an email from James Platt, who think i'm anti-Lord's. Thanks for getting in touch, James. I'm not anti-Lord's, I just don't think you should have to watch sport in a tie (I know there are lots of bits of Lord's where you don't have to wear a tie). Morne Morkel switches ends, is driven for four by Ballance, then pins the left-hander a nasty blow on the inside thigh.

Joe doesn't look quite himself he has had a flirt outside off stump and hooked one up in the air. Everyone said he looked very nervous this morning and I accept that. We have two quality players in Root and Cook and three in the middle order that are the engine room of the side.

Close! Joe Root in all sorts of trouble and probably should be on his way back. A bumper from Rabada, quick. Root top-edges a hook in the direction of fine leg, towards what looks to be a sub fielder. He's flailing around with his hands in the air, then eventually lurches backwards, not getting anything on it. To make matters worse, it bounces inside the boundary. Get right on the rope!

You've got to admire Gary Ballance. Joe Root looks better and has a better technique, but Gary will fight, he's mentally strong. He gets deep in the crease which is odd but he doesn't push at the ball, he usually waits for the ball to come to him.

Kevin Pietersen is at Lord's, sitting on one of the posh balconies chatting to fellow South African Ernie Els. "You know, Ernie, I really should still be in this team. I could win the Open too." Blimey, that's a rozzer from Philander, nipping past the grope of Gary Ballance. That's a decent response, too, a drive through the covers for four.

We want to find out if Jennings really is a Test match player and he deserves a few innings because of that century he scored in his first match. We need to get something settled in the top five because the Ashes is just round the corner.

  9. Eng 24-2published at 11:45 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Ballance 5, Root 5

Rabada has flashes of blue on the back of his white spikes. They kick up as he glides across the turf, before a launch into an action that is smooth as melted chocolate. Pace, high-80s. Root looks to cut one that climbs. Could have been three down. Lord's continues its din. If you closed your eyes and just listened, you would never know if England were 600-2 or 35 all out.

Rich Hird: Here we go, time for a day of Yorkshire vs South Africa! Great plan by Root.

  11. Eng 24-2published at 11:40 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

Vernon Philander is barely touching 80mph, but he plays tricks with a batsman's mind by using line, sleight of hand, some seam movement and the slope. The big pads of Gary Ballance are a huge target for the bowler. If he sneaks one past then South Africa will be singing. It's relentless stuff. Ballance might wish he's back in Yorkshire smashing county attacks around for fun.

I think it's a good batting pitch. You get the impression it has a touch of green but the ball has hardly moved and the pace of the ball is not that quick. It's just about getting yourself in and getting started.

  13. Eng 24-2published at 11:36 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

England are already two down, so are no doubt delighted to see Kagiso Rabada pawing at the ground at the end of his run-up. Root's instinct will probably to attack England's way out of this pickle, and a jack-knifing uppercut over the slips is not the sort of stroke you expect to see in the first hour of a Test.

Callum Michael‏: Ballance had a job there, it didn't look out and surely the umpires' delay should indicate a review is vital!

Philander doesn't give you much respite. He has many virtues, gets very close to the stumps and asks a lot of questions. When he gets that extra bounce he causes that little more havoc. He reminds me a little of Matthew Hoggard, who could exploit the new ball.

  16. Eng 20-2published at 6 overs

    Philander 3-0-10-2

Not only has it pitched outside leg stump, it would have missed leg too. By some distance. On first glance, it just didn't look right. Jennings was taking guard across his stumps, so may have thought it was straighter than it was. He also might have been foxed by the slope. We're only half an hour into this Test and England are down to their last two specialist batsmen.

  17. Eng 17-2published at 11:29 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

It's pitched outside leg stump! No review used! Jennings would have survived. The cry of "Rooooot" is even employed by the anti-fun crowd at Lord's. The new skipper has a job to do in his first morning on the job.

They had quite a long discussion whether to review that. It hit him on the front pad half forward. We talked about how odd it was to see Jennings batting on off stump.

Jennings lbw Philander 8 (Eng 17-2)

Another gone! England in trouble! Why hasn't Keaton Jennings reviewed this? At first glance it looked very leggy. Has Vernon Philander got it to nip up the slope? Jennings had a long, long chat with Gary Ballance, then walked off. Did it even pitch outside leg stump? Send for the skipper...

It was a pretty loose shot from Cook so England have their two slightly unknowns at the crease. It's a pretty challenging time to be out there, the ball is new and it's zipping around a bit.
