Ballance really does take a huge stride backwards. When the ball is released, his legs are miles apart, like Blackadder's Prince Regent preparing to give a speech. Morkel is round the wicket to both of these left-handers, bowling himself off his feet and half-appealing whilst on his knees. It's hot at Lord's. The bloke selling Jack Russell sunhats outside the ground has earned enough to send his kids to university.

Ballance never bats at three for Yorkshire - during his last incarnation and this one. There's a reason he bats lower for his county and that's because they will get more value if they bat him further down the order.

    Philander 2-0-7-1

Looking again, Philander got that ball to nip away from Cook off the seam, down the slope. Cook really didn't need to play. He was unbalanced and the bat was miles away from his body. Ballance, his third coming, is in a sleeveless sweater. He's got his usual back-and-across trigger. A play-and-miss, then an angle to third man for a couple.

It's a straightforward catch and a straightforward dismissal, we talked about the outside edge being the way to get it. It was a fairly loose shot and because he is no great pace it was the extra zip with that one from Philander that surprised Cook.

    Cook c De Kock b Philander 3 (Eng 14-1)

Gone! South Africa strike and Alastair Cook's first post-captaincy knock ends in pretty horrible fashion. It's a nothing shot, a waft at a shortish, wide delivery. Looking to force Vernon Philander off the back foot, Cook gets an edge through to Quinton de Kock, who takes a simple catch. Gary Ballance is exposed early on.

The prime way you expect to get batsmen out is via the outside edge and I would have thought going round the wicket would reduce the chances of getting the batsmen to nick it.

The first boundary. Morkel strays on to the hip of Jennings, who turns the ball fine up towards the pavilion. At times like this I feel like I'm contractually obliged to mention the hum of the Lord's crowd. I suppose the only thing that comes close is the buzz of Centre Court in between games. Only, on Centre Court, you're not allowed to pop champagne corks on to the grass.

Philander is running down the slope, meaning he'll have to nip it back up if he wants to hit Cook's pads. Full length, no great pace, a hint of swing in the air. As the wind flutters the flags on top of the pavilion, Cook tucks a couple off his legs. Twice Philander oversteps. Problems coming down the hill?

Philander can make that new ball talk, he hits the same at no great pace, I don't think he'll get much above 80mph, but hits the seam often and it's that that gets him his wickets.

Both? Vernon Philander shares the new ball. He's not missed many buffets during his spell at Sussex.

There's bounce. Then again, Morne Morkel is tall enough to bounce a ping pong ball off a puddle. Cook jams down on a full ball to take the first run of the match, gets to the other end and shares a grin with Morkel. Two of the nicest men in cricket. Round the wicket to Jennings, who doesn't have to play.

Lord's fills slowly, even on the sunniest of days, which might not be unrelated to the size of some of the picnic hampers being hauled in. Lots to get the teeth into with this England team, even ignoring the big cheese of Joe Root: the return of Alastair Cook to the ranks, the home Test bow of Johannesburg-born Keaton Jennings, another chance for Gary Ballance, two spinners for the first time in a Lord's Test in 24 years...

England are sporting a new set of whites. I say whites, because they have gone back to the traditional cream. Much easier on the eye. Cook, short-sleeved shirt, looks lean. Jennings fills his more snugly. Cook to take strike, familiar foe Morne Morkel with the ball.

I understand that if England have picked a 13-man squad, they would have picked Mark Stoneman. Gary Ballance has earned the right because of the runs he's made for Yorkshire and this is probably his last chance. I thought he would be selected again to bat at five, not at three.

The five-minute bell, rung by former England batsman James Taylor. We're about to get our first post-captaincy look at Alastair Cook.
