The captain took full advantage of his moments of fortune with some sparkling strokeplay as his team closed the opening day of the series in a healthy position on 357-5. He finished on 184 not out and added a quickfire unbroken 167 in just 32.3 overs with Moeen Ali, who played some typically stylish shots in his 61.

Remarkably there was another wicket off a no-ball - and even more remarkably it was bowled by left-arm spinner Maharaj, as Root was able to continue on 149.

Golden Boy Root went on to a superb 12th Test century, his third at Lord's.

Stokes was eventually dismissed for 56 in the 55th over to leave England on 190-5, ending a partnership of 114 with his skipper.

Stokes was bowled off his pads by Morne Morkel when on 44, only for the fast bowler to be called for a no-ball.

Both England batsmen hit sixes as they took the attack to the South Africans.

Captain Root also found his fluency with an array of assured strokes.

But after lunch England then began a superb fightback, with big-hitting Ben Stokes quickly finding his touch.

England slipped to 76-4 shortly before lunch when Jonny Bairstow fell lbw to Philander for 20 in the 23rd over.

There was another reprieve for the captain when he was on 16 and was dropped in the gully by JP Duminy.

The review England opted for was a peculiar one as Gary Ballance was shown to be plumb lbw in front of middle stump for 20 on his return to the Test side.

Root had made only five when he hooked at Rabada. The sub fielder Aiden Markram could have taken a routine catch on the boundary but wandered too far in and the ball went over his head and away for four.

Keaton Jennings also went cheaply as England decided against a review even though the ball appeared to pitch outside leg stump.

It was the worst possible way for Gary Ballance to get out, similar to how he has before.

Batting at three against this quality you should be oversee that delivery.

I don't like the fact he is batting at three. He didn't bat at three for the Lions and hasn't for Yorkshire. I would have preferred him at five.

We saw Keaton Jennings in India and he looked a quality player with that 100 in Mumbai.

It is early days for Keaton Jennings. One thing you hear is that he is strong and is potential captaincy material - a leader in the group.

He is a young player learning. I like the way he plays.

The indication to review (for his wicket) has to come from the non-striker. I do think Jennings has game that will keep him around England team for while yet.

South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel:

"It was a very good start but the way we came out after lunch was something we are not very proud of as a bowling unit, there were too many loose deliveries and no-balls. It's costly for us, I can't really put my finger on why, it was just one of those frustrating days. Take nothing away from Joe Root, he rotated the strike really well but the quality of this team is that we will come back and fight."

Ralph Brooker: England's middle-order, the best 4-7 in world cricket for decades, i.e. since Adam Gilchrist was playing. Frightening.

Small Man Peaky: A crying shame that de Villiers isn't playing in the Test series. Would have been great to see him go head to head with Root.
