Thanks Stephan, what a wonderful time of year it is, a Lord's Test, the Lions series in the balance, the majesty of Wimbledon and it's the first round at the Irish Open, Rory McIlroy, Andrew "Beef" Johnston and Lee Westwood are all level par midway through their rounds, Oliver Fisher leading at eight under.

We've had a few casualties at SW19 today but we're guaranteed a home winner in the ladies' doubles, it's a match between two British pairs on Court Seven.

And that's the tea interval, the end of a second session that has belonged to England. From 86-4, the home side have got themselves towards parity. A couple of swift ones after the break would have South Africa right back on top.

Stokes came in under pressure just before lunch when South Africa were right on top and he has got them into a reasonable position.

50 for Ben Stokespublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Eng 180-4

There's no doubt this time, even if Ben Stokes is slightly sheepish about raising his bat for a second occasion. It's a ninth Test fifty for Stokes, to go with four centuries. He's digging England out of a hole, just like he and Root did against New Zealand on this ground two years ago. Mind you, it's not that long ago that he was bowled off a no-ball...

This is the third century partnership between these two and it took them 168 balls.

My wife once suggested a move to Lincolnshire. Beautiful county, but not a first class cricket county. Suggestion therefore rejected.

Stokes is made to wait to complete his second half-century of the day. Even a De Bruyn full toss is hit straight to mid-off. There are about 10 minutes to go until tea.

It's been a little bit monotonous after the break with Maharaj and you feel Elgar should be mixing it up. As a captain you've got to stay ahead of the moment a little bit.

  13. Eng 175-4published at 15:28 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

How do we deal with it when Stokes gets the single to 'officially' take him to 50? Has the Lord's scoreboard corrected itself yet? Will Stokes get a second round of applause? Will he raise his bat again? I think there might be an announcement going on over the ground now. I've never seen this before in a Test. Was there even some boos there?

"I'll get the tickets if you make the picnic"....this was the message I had from a good mate taking me to Lord's on Saturday. Question is - what should I pack in the picnic? Any help appreciated...

This is curious. The Lord's scoreboard thinks Ben Stokes has just gone to 50 with a clip off his pads for four. However, we think Stokes was credited with a boundary when the Morkel no-ball went to the boundary. Stokes is raising his bat and taking the applause of the crowd, but he's only on 49.

Chris Gunn‏: That was not a good delivery from Morkel. He overstepped by a yard. It makes such a difference to the batsman.

South Africa call upon the fifth bowler as the sun temporarily disappears. Theunis de Bruyn, some gentle medium pace, is looking to wobble some in-swingers into the pads of the reprieved Ben Stokes. Morkel, at fine leg, strokes his chin. The disappointment of last over is eased by a mate in the crowd to whom he gives a thumbs-up.

  19. Stokes bowled off no-ball on 44published at 15:18 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

Can you believe this? It's a beauty from Morne Morkel, it leaves Ben Stokes face down on the deck and takes the top of middle stump via a flick of the pad. Morkel, though, has his head in his hands immediately, because the call is instant. It's a huge no-ball. That's two drops off Root and Stokes bowled off a no-ball.

It's been good batting from Root and Stokes, the wicket looks good, Philander extracted some movement in the morning and South Africa had England on the ropes. The one thing we can say is that the outfield is "blitz" quick.
