South Africa are only halfway through the 90 overs that they are due to bowl today, so we could be in for a long old evening. Still Maharaj, stand-in skipper at slip behind a pair of shades. Stokes sweeps with power to the square leg fence. The sting has gone from the attack, England may finally be dragging themselves to a decent position.

The pitch is a road. I think tomorrow will be a really good day to bat, we may get a few cracks and see it start to keep lower on Saturday and Sunday but it depends on the weather.

Philander, who sounds like a man you can't trust, hurries in on an angle, delivering the ball from close to the stumps with a whir of the arms. Both of these men are keen to get on the front foot and the ball isn't doing nearly as much as it was first thing this morning. The sun is out, Lord's is a picture. A time to be batting.

Sri Lanka have completed an easy eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe in Hambantota, thanks to centuries from openers Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka. They put on 229 for the first wicket, to ensure victory was never in doubt in a chase of 311. Here's the final scorecard.

Ben Stokes isn't playing the game at the moment. Where once he was all biffing and boshing, now he is calmly stroking Keshav Maharaj along the green Lord's carpet. For a moment, the game stops, Maharaj engaging in conversation with umpire Ravi, as if temporarily unsure of what to do with the leather in his hand. Ravi points towards the other end. "Chuck it down there, lad."

Now then, this is interesting. You know that South Africa review that should have been called a no-ball? The playing conditions state that, if the third umpire discovers it to be a no-ball, it doesn't count as an unsuccessful review. Therefore, South Africa wouldn't have lost a review. It seems a bit of a daft rule, but a rule it is.

Stokes is always looking for the boundary but I have been impressed with how straight he has played.

It's almost disappointing when Stokes isn't on strike against Maharaj. When those two are doing battle, you just feel like something is going to happen. Joe Root restores calm, but still crabs out of his crease to flick through mid-wicket for four. England are inching back into this game, but one more wicket would have South Africa bang on top once more.

It looks to be one of those weeks where the new ball has to be used well by the fielding side, once it gets softer it gets a lot more difficult. South Africa are now just trying to bowl dots.

Absolutely loving this chat. Times when the live text has affected your life. If it helps, we can ask them to change the wicket colour? Vernon Philander, three wickets this morning, returns. Stokes, not in the mood to be dictated to, defends after a couple of strides down the pitch.

Ben Stokes is basically playing one big shot an over at Maharaj. It's a great battle, because Maharaj won't mind Stokes coming after him - he could have already had him once. The Lord's din has definitely cranked up a notch, probably because the bubbles are flowing freely. My word, Root has timed the leather off this drive. Eased up the slope for four.

Joe Root had a bit of fortune at the start of the innings with one that just cleared the fine-leg fielder and another that flew through the gully but this partnership has been a good one. The skipper and the vice skipper trying to put the wheels back on for England.

No bat, the ball hit Root on the helmet, then ballooned into the air. If Root had been given, there would have been hell up. For my money, that was a no-ball.
