It has been an interesting morning's play.
There has been a big debate of what do first but I think South Africa made the right decision to bat. It was always going to be tough and they needed to fight.
They now just have an awkward period until lunch.
England have bowled a little short but it is a difficult surface to score on. It has been an old school Test match morning.
Kuhn 26 Amla 14
Mark Wood has looked threatening this morning, but Heino Kuhn has shown a steely determination. His patience for leaving a couple of tricky balls is rewarded with a loose delivery, which he crunches through the covers for four.

Joe Root has been bullied into that review.
You have to laugh. Root needed to take a breath and speak to his keeper. Sometimes you can't trust your bowler.
Ben Stokes with his second ball after the rain delay strikes the pad of Hashim Amla. He looked outside the line but urges Joe Root to review it and his captain agrees. The third umpire also determines there was some bat on it and Amla survives.
The players are back out. Ben Stokes to finish two balls in his over which was interrupted by the rain.

In the last 10 Tests here, the average score is 294 in the first innings.
The rain showers appear to have petered out at Trent Bridge and the covers are slowly coming off. The umpires are not quite peckish enough to call an early and play is due to restart at 12.45.

The Trent Bridge Inn. You'll hear plenty about this place during the weekend. World renowned? Debatable, but how many pubs have a gate directly into an international sport stadium?
Hashim Amla has looked solid so far. Here's that sumptuous drive for four off Mark Wood which is probably the shot of the day so far.
Kuhn 22 Amla 14
The Trent Bridge ground staff are busying themselves putting the covers on the outfield. Might be an early lunch on the cards here.
Mark Wood has bowled with real aggression to Heino Kuhn. Here's a clip of that vicious bouncer earlier which struck the South African opener on the helmet.

Amla is the 30th player to reach 8000 runs.
He is the fourth South African behind Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers.
Ben Stokes struggling a little here. A short wide one is guided through point for four by Hashim Amla.
Moments later the heavens open and the players quickly run for cover. The brollies are up and rain has stopped play. Hopefully it's just a passing shower.

I think Amla has played too much one-day cricket. He is not as tight as he once was.
His technique has gone a little bit. He gets trapped square-on.

Amla has been struggling recently.
His average was over 50 in his career but it has now dropped below 50.
In his last 12 matches he averages 31.
Mark Wood not quite as effective with the short ball to Hashim Amla. The experienced South African batsman rocks on to the back foot and hooks the ball for four. That was all control and timing. He is more cautious to the next two deliveries, though, ducking and weaving.
Plenty of hustle and bustle from Ben Stokes in a busy second over. A bouncer keeps wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow on his toes as he takes the ball high above his head.
Joe Root raises a smile as he shares a joke with former England captain Alastair Cook in the slip cordon

South Africa have done OK so far. I think they made the right call to bat. You could get some uneven bounce on days three and four.
It was a tough call at the toss but I would have batted.
Mark Wood had looked on course for a third maiden over but he overpitches his final ball of the over to Hashim Amla and the South Africa batsman confidently dispatches it through the covers for four.
