Straight after the review, when the players had returned to their fielding positions, first slip Alastair Cook was in the ear of second slip Joe Root. Some advice on how to deal with the review system? Could that have come earlier? Could the former skipper even have had a say in the decision to fritter those two reviews away? Root is learning the lessons of captaincy.

Joe Root personality is such he will struggle to say no to a review from a forceful character such as Stuart Broad or Ben Stokes. I don't think I ever saw Stokes demand a review from Alastair Cook. It's where you need a strong keeper, like Matt Prior. He would have the final say a lot of the time.

    Kuhn 34 Amla 16

So that's England out of reviews after 24 overs. Their first was a poor decision to take it upstairs but Root can be forgiven on that one.

It was very straight and my initial reaction was 'that's close'.

  4. Not outpublished at 23.3 overs

    Good decision from Paul Reiffel.

The replays show the ball would have gone a couple inches over middle stump.

It looked very straight in full motion.

Three balls in and we have a review.

Stuart Broad hits Heino Kuhn on the pads. The umpire says no but England go upstairs.

A tad high but this is close.

    The players are back out.

Has new skipper Joe Root given his bowlers a telling off after they were a little back of a length in the morning session?

It'll be Broad to start proceedings.

The dismissal of Dean Elgar brought Hashim Amla to the crease for the visitors and, after a quiet time at Lord's, he has made a decent start.

The 34-year-old pulled Wood to the boundary to become the fourth South Africa to reach 8000 Test runs.

I'd say Mark Wood has probably been the pick of the England bowlers.

Jimmy Anderson found swing early on but Wood has bowled a couple of beauties to Kuhn in particular and hit the opener on the helmet with a dangerous bouncer.

Heino Kuhn made just 10 runs in two innings on debut at Lord's last week but today has fought his way through to 34 at lunch.

The ball has beaten his bat a fair few times and he has taken a couple of nasty blows but the important thing for him is he is still there.

So just one wicket fell in that morning session as a fine catch from Liam Dawson saw Dean Elgar trudge back to the dressing room.

The dismissal was Jimmy Anderson's 300th in England, making him the first man to do so.

All in all though, South Africa will be the happier with the loss of just one wicket.

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

The first challenge was to get through to lunch and on a surface like this you have to try and lay down a platform and then get on top of things as the day goes on.

South Africa, having won the toss, knew they had to fight and have done well.

England have to be touch fuller. Joe Root has to say to his bowlers 'what do you need from me for you to be fuller?'.

    Thanks Tim.

    Good Test Match cricket that.

England not at their best but South Africa have stuck to their task well, unlike another batting side in the previous Test on this wicket.

I forget who that was? Anyone remember?

  18. Lunch interval - SA 56-1published at 23rd over

    Kuhn 34 Amla 16

Ben Stokes sends down an uneventful over which is blocked out by Hashim Amla just before lunch. South Africa have probably edged the morning session having come through a difficult opening period in overcast conditions.

  19. SA 56-1published at 22nd over

Fascinating little contest between Mark Wood and Heino Kuhn developing. The Durham fast bowler struck Kuhn on the helmet earlier with a bouncer. This time the South Africa opener decides to take on the short ball and hooks it, albeit not with a great degree of conviction, through square leg for four.

Christopher Lane: Poor from Ben Stokes that. I could see that was outside the line from my desk in Leeds.

Flemming Jensen: Horrid review in every way. Loud noise, way outside the line, Stokes' attitude, Root relenting quickly. Really poor all around.
