Theo Bowyer: Do not see what the selectors see in Dawson... buffet bowling at its best. Why no Rashid?

Zeb Bowyer‏: How Dawson gets in this team before Rashid is beyond me. If fit I would have Woakes in for Wood, strengthens the batting also.

Football Fragmento‏: Moeen has just taken 10 wickets in a Test. Would like to see him bowling ahead of Dawson.

England seem to be carrying a strange squad around with them at the moment. There's no way they're going to play five seamers. They were always going to play the two spinners again here.

Decent comeback from Dawson but still a couple more runs added to the total.

13, seven, seven and nine runs in the previous four overs.

That leads to a conflab in the middle between Root, Anderson and Wood.

    Amla 55 De Kock 34

South Africa are going after Liam Dawson now. De Kock cuts him for four off the first ball before dispatching him down the ground with the same result.

    Pressure on the spinner.

It must be lovely to bat at the other end to Quinton de Kock. You know he's going to score so you can get on with your own innings.

Mark Wood is leaking runs. Two boundaries in the last over and now he gets too leg side allowing Amla to flick him off the hip for four.

He bangs another one in to Amla but there is little danger. The South African keeps his pull under control for a single.

    Seven from the over.

The Gurkha: Amla's back foot punch shot is up there with Kohli's cover drive.

I'll throw the Stokes on drive into the mix here as well. Other suggestions more than welcome.

    Amla 50 De Kock 25

As you'd expect in the second session of the day there is no turn for Dawson and Amla takes advantage.

He skips down and lofts the spinner for a glorious six down the ground.

That brings up his 50. Well batted.

Drinks being enjoyed in the stands and now on the field as well.

Non-alcoholic for the players I'm sure.

The Barmy Army have just made themselves heard for the first time this summer. So far, we have had one-day cricket and a Lord's Test where the Barmies aren't particularly welcome. You knew it was a big day for the Army when spotting a designated pub for them outside the ground. A big year for the Barmies, a winter in Australia, where it all began.

    Amla 44 De Kock 24

Like Geoffrey says De Kock has breezed his way into the 20s. He's looking very much at ease and Wood's latest over goes for 13, the most in the match so far.

Both teams in cable-knit jumpers, boundaries back to the fence, Amla's cover drive. This is classic Test match cricket.

De Kock hasn't smashed the ball. He's just caressed his way to 23 as though he's been batting for an hour. He's only faced 23 balls.

It's ridiculous that Quinton de Kock was batting at eight in the last Test. He's a number four batsman if I ever saw one.

  14. SA 109-2published at 36.2 overs

Quinton de Kock really can time a cricket ball.

First he caresses a full ball from Wood to the point boundary before picking up another four a ball later this time through the leg side.

It's been skillful, watchful batting from South Africa. Proper Test match batting, which has been good to see after what happened at Lord's.

Time for spin. Here's Liam Dawson.

The left-armer dismissed Amla at Lord's remember but for now he is up against De Kock.

The Amla-Dawson battles resumes on the final ball after De Kock brings up the 100 with a three but Amla is happy to just come forward and block.

  18. SA 98-2published at 35 overs

Mark Wood is back into the attack. The Durham quick was impressive before the lunch break can he find movement like Anderson and Broad?

The makes a decent start without any major threat, every ball full and outside off stump.

First strangled cries of "we are the army. The Barmy, Barmy Army" from the stands.

Batsmen like De Kock and Gower are fluid. They ease the ball at the last minute. They play forward, their weight is always going into the ball. That's how they time it so well.

  20. SA 97-2published at 34 overs

Ben Stokes is in charge of England currently as Joe Root nips off the field. Stokes not only takes Root's job title but also his place in the slips.

He stops Broad at the top of his mark to move the fielders in the deep. I think Ben might be enjoying this but it looks as though it'll be short lived. The skipper is back.
