England need 406 runs to win

One wicket for three runs from his four overs for Chris Morris.

Pace, aggression and so far accuracy. He was left out of the South Africa team for the first Test remember.

Another testing over for Cook to deal with. A maiden.

That was a cracking first over from Maharaj, it will send shock waves and ripples through the England dressing room. He puts a lot of revs on the ball which is unusual these days. Bairstow will be in for a hell of a time.

There is rough for Maharaj to bowl at, he bowled beautifully in the first innings. He wasn't just defensive and holding the game from one end. Du Plessis will be hoping he can do the same today. Two or three wickets from him makes the seamers life a lot easier.

    Target 474

Unsurprisingly after Duanne Olivier's expensive three overs, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj is brought into the attack.

Maharaj dismissed Bairstow with a beauty in the first innings and serves up another that pitches middle and leg before spinning and bouncing past Jonny B's edge.

That's a horrible delivery for a batsman. You just have to hope you miss it. More for these two to deal with.

The England top order was an issue post Lord's. When you look at Jennings and Bairstow, and this isn't me being mean, as the opposition you will always feel you are in the game. The other option would be bringing in an all-rounder for Dawson because The Oval can be flat. But in the long-run, I think England would be better served with another batsman.

    Target 474

A pin has certainly been put through the balloon of optimism that was there before play.

But, for as long as Alastair Cook is batting, England fans will have a crumb of hope. Morris is bowling really quick as he tests out Bairstow with an 89mph yorker.

He found a bit of swing to go with the speed for the Root dismissal but Bairstow is able to block thanks to the lack of movement.

South Africa will hope there is a fear factor with Bairstow and Moeen that they can prey on, which will technically make them play another way. Mentally, if you're worried about the short ball you will do things that aren't natural to you.

Alastair Cook is still fighting. He plays a lovely shot to punch four through the covers. That shows there is not too much in this pitch.

As does that! A lovely way to score your first runs. Pitched up again from Olivier and Bairstow drives from mid on with a straight bat.

Duanne Olivier has been expensive. Three overs bowled this morning and he has conceded 25 runs.

The big wicket. The dismissal of the England captain.

In all fairness there is not a lot he could have done...

David Townend: We can all talk about replacing Ballance & Jennings etc but sometimes teams just bowl well against you.

Peter Eastwood: Is Woakes back soon? Please say yes.

Chris Corfield: Why is there never talk of Morgan being given another Test chance? He's the sort of leader Root would love to lean on.

Chris Morris got plenty of slaps on the head as South Africa celebrated that wicket. Be nice lads. He's just bowled England's main man.

Morris has his tail up now. He greets Jonny Bairstow with an aggressive bouncer followed by a full ball.

Trevor Bayliss watches on silently from the balcony. Will he have anything to say to the batsmen before going out?

That is what Morris will bring, not consistency but the X-Factor. Full, pace, swing, Joe Root squared up. Root is walking off slower than Inzamam-ul-Haq used to. He has got out by an excellent delivery.

    Unplayable. A beauty from Morris.

An 87mph yorker swings away and castles Root. That's a brilliant delivery from the South African.

The skipper is gone and England's hopes too?

  14. Eng 55-3published at 18 overs

Again Olivier strays in line onto Root's pads but South Africa, despite their dominant position, have a fielder on the leg side boundary keeping Root just to one.

Cook has the ability to concentrate and bat long periods without scoring a run. I don't think Root, Bairstow or Root can bat 10, 20 minutes without hitting a boundary. Cook is comfortable in doing that.

If England are to win this how many of the runs will Alastair Cook have to score?

    250? 300?

Here are four runs to get him on the way to that.

  17. Eng 50-2published at 17 overs

    Cook 31 Root 7

Just two slips for Morris with England still 425 runs in arrears. Make of that what you will. He has got two men out on the hook but Root isn't tempted by the bouncer.

He pushes a quick single into the off side and is able to make his ground comfortably because Temba Bavuma doesn't pick up cleanly.

Bavuma is annoyed. He's one of the tourists' best fielders.

I find it difficult to watch Jennings, he is so stiff, so upright. His head never goes to the ball. I wonder how he even sees the ball because he's so upright. He has to work really hard.

An hour gone and England have seen the back of Morkel and Philander for now. The bad news is South Africa have taken two wickets with those two in the attack.

Chris Morris comes on after drinks.

How many more chances is Gary Ballance going to get? Appreciate it's high class bowling, but he just cannot get anything going at Test level. Seems he was given a third chance by virtue of being Root's mate .
