The fact Alastair Cook can hit the ball through the off side like that shows he's in good touch.

Target 474
What was I saying about Cook? He's totally squared up by delivery from Morkel and Cook gets a leading edge but the ball goes just wide of the diving Morris in the gully.
The South African has dismissed Cook nine times in his career but the former England skipper does will to get on the front foot and punch three more.

Philander would be my nightmare bowler to face. 78mph, wobble seam. Quite often I used to play at those bowlers too early.
He is having a great series. He's averaging 56 with the bat and never seems to fail with the new ball. He's always takes wickets.
Target 474
Vernon Philander's pace is only occasionally creeping beyond 80mph for the most part it is around 78/79mph.
The crowd give Cook a healthy round of applause and a cheer as he knocks the bowler for three off the back foot.
Somehow Cook makes you feel at ease. Ballance not so much. More gasps as he leaves a ball that just bounces over off stump.

Those calling for the scalp of Keaton Jennings would do well to remember the following numbers: 0, 0, 6, 31.
Those were the first four Test scores of one Graham Alan Gooch - after which he was dropped for three years. He didn't turn out too bad, did he?

Cook 5 Ballance 4
Plenty of you calling for Jennings' exit from this side. The recent stats make pretty horrible reading but he was the leading scorer last year in County Championship Division One. He can clearly bat. The question is can he do it at Test level.
That same question is asked of Gary Ballance and he's taken a nasty blow on the finger tips from Morkel. A few words as well from the big fast bowler.
It hurt him but Ballance played that well, keeping the ball down and away from short leg.

Sam Rogers: That was a top ball by Philander but if Hales is missing out of the Test team because of technique how does Jennings survive?
Clive Heaphy: Jennings' technique is schoolboy. Big gap, no footwork. Is he really England number one/two standard?
Ben: England have a better chance of winning than batting two days out. Modern day batsmen can't bat out two days to get a draw anymore.

It was a good ball from Philander but an opening batsman should have a technique which covers your stumps regardless of whether the ball has nipped back or away.
Target 474
No one can say Gary Ballance's batting is easy on the eye but England don't need flamboyant stroke play now. They need someone to dig in.
He gets his first runs courtesy of a streaky four through the slips although there was no chance of a catch. The ball went straight down off the edge.
England's task looked almost impossible at the start of the day. It looks even harder now they're a wicket down early on...

It's a game of cat and mouse between Cook and Morkel. He's leaving well but knows the straighter one is coming. The slips could soon be into the game.
Cook 4 Ballance 0
It has taken him 22 deliveries but Alastair Cook is off the mark. Morkel is keeping the ball full and nudging 90mph but Cook plays that typical clip into the leg side for a couple.
And again. Two more. England need their former skipper to calm the nerves.

Tom: New opener needed.
Stuart Mitchell: Well that should be Jennings replaced for the third Test.
Nik: Would love to see Alastair Cook carry his bat for more than two days here, and to be honest it's England's best hope.
Target 474
Brilliant from Vernon Philander. So often we hear "hit the top of off" and the South African does just that straight away.
How big a mental blow will that be for the England dressing room?

It's a technical flaw from Keaton Jennings but you have to give Philander credit. The previous ball was the same length and it went away. This one nipped back. It's beautiful, magnificent bowling.
Jennings b Philander 3 (Eng 4-1)
Disaster for England. Keaton Jennings goes in the second over of the day.
Vernon Philander is on the money straight away and gets one to nip back through the gate and knocks off stump out of the ground.
South Africa are unsurprisingly delighted.

South Africa have put a short leg in for Vernon Philander. It's to stop the batsmen playing out of their crease, keeps them pinned back and brings the keeper and slips into play.

This is a defining day for England as a team. They have to prove they are capable of batting for a whole day.
Target 474
Morne Morkel pirouettes and charges in to Keaton Jennings to start us off.
Trent Bridge is not full, perhaps a sign of the confidence the locals have in England. Hopefully after a positive start we'll see more supporters in the crowd.
Jennings gets off the mark with a nice pull. Plenty of groans from the slips as Cook lets the final ball pass his off stump. Cookie knows what he's doing lads, quieten down.

This is still a flat pitch with just a hint of uneven bounce from a good length. England can't afford more than one wicket lost in first session.
