  1. Eng 93-5published at 35 overs

    Stokes 15, Moeen 0

Moeen yet to get off the mark, can he do it this over?

A flick off the pads, a clip to square leg, one left outside the off, the next straying down leg, a back-foot defensive and an outswinger which is also left alone. All six deliveries had the same outcome, no run.

    Moeen has faced 19 balls.

Ben Stokes is fighting and really trying to play with control.

  3. Eng 93-5published at 34 overs

Nice from Stokes. Two very different looking boundaries. The first a controlled drive through mid-off, the second a crafty paddle sweep tp send the ball racing down to the fine leg boundary.

Better from England, although Stokes did have a little nibble at Maharaj, playing inside the line and lucky not to find the outside edge.

A lot of people slating the batting order yet last week we beat SA comfortably. They haven't become poor batsmen over night. They just haven't played the game situation well.

  5. Eng 85-5published at 33 overs

Short from Morkel and pulled nicely by Stokes to kindly offer the strike to Moeen, who perhaps isn't as thankful as you may think. Expect a lot more short stuff to the England all-rounder who looks as comfortable as a fella laying on a bed of nails.

Morkel was on the Morne (see what I did) straight after lunch, removing Bairstow courtesy of an awful shot.

Diabolical from England. What is Bairstow thinking of? Complete madness. There is a lack of heart and nouse in this batting order. Serious problems for Root and Bayliss to address.

Moeen, on strike, is happy to remain watchful and let the ball go past his off stump. A bit of a straighter one and it loops up in the air, falling safe where leg slip would have been. Cries of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from the South African fielders but I don't think there was any bat on that. Another scoreless over goes by.

Dan Miles: That's 6 losses in the last 7 test matches. Might this be the worst English test side for a generation?

Zeb Bowyer: This batting is indefensible, No courage, No fight and No application. Geoffrey will have a field day. Joe, welcome to captaincy

Roger Williams: Remind me what Trevor Bayliss does?

  9. Eng 84-5published at 31 overs

Stokes is down. Floored. Referee is counting to 10. What a ripper from Morkel. Quick, short, angling into Stokes who tries to back away with feet off the ground and he falls on his backside.

    What a ball.

Andrew Reyes: Brain freeze by Bairstow. Wreck less.

Mr Gray: You can hear Boycott revving up in the background after that

James McHale: Forget needing new openers, I think England need a new batting coach.

In comes Moeen Ali to loud cheers from the Nottingham crowd. A fan favourite. He see's off the over without scoring.

England in danger of not seeing this out to tea.

I can't believe I have seen that. All you need to do is dangle the carrot and they'll go for it. Dumb batting! What is he thinking? Even if it goes for four or six... that's not the point now. It's about batting time.

    Bairstow c Morris b Maharaj 16 (Eng 84-5)

That didn't take long. Yet another poor dismissal for England. Maharaj, who did Bairstow with a beauty this morning, has won the battle of the mind games as the England number five advances down the wicket and lofts it straight to mid-on. Shocking. Soft wicket to lose.

  14. Eng 83-4published at 29 overs

    Bairstow 16, Stokes 5

So it's Morne Morkel to kick off proceedings after lunch and it's a decent second ball of the over. It keeps a tad lower than expected, squares up Bairstow and hits him high on the thigh pad.

Bairstow looks very unconvincing as he plays one onto his pads and then just manages to lean back and get under a short delivery.

Better from the Yorkshireman, who ends the over with a fine four whipped through mid-wicket.

Ben Wire: Don't agree SA's bowling is amazing; good, yes, but you'd expect someone in the top order to batten down hatches and stick in

Sandy Arbuthnot: No need to panic. Bairstow and Stokes just have to repeat their Cape Town partnership (plus a bit) and England win.

Gareth Neale: People clambering for Eoin Morgan to play test cricket again are crazy. He hasn't even played four day cricket for two years!

So that leaves Mr Bairstow and Mr Stokes at the crease. How much longer will this match last? Will we see another session? The players are making their way to the middle.

I think of the English wickets that have fallen, Jennings and Ballance got out to balls that didn't do a great deal. But the Root and Cook dismissals were down to quick bowling from Morris.

What we need to see now is some counter-attack batting from Stokes, to give England a glimmer of hope for the rest of the series.

That shining light I was just talking about? Yeah, well someone put the flame out. That someone being Chris Morris, who has been on form this morning.

A rare Cook dismissal off a short ball. In fact it's the first time in more than two years in a home Test.

I remain confused about the idea of picking an extra batsman for England rather than two spinners. Does that mean Moeen Ali would have to drop down to number eight? That seems crazy but who else would bat in that position?

A lot of the chat this morning has focused on England’s poor batting. Let’s just take a moment to appreciate this beauty from Chris Morris to remove Joe Root.
