    Elgar 58, Bavuma 13

Stokes (2-29 from eight overs) takes a rest and Stuart Broad has switched to the Pavilion End. Two slips, a fifth slip, and a gully (or two gullies if you prefer) - and with England attempting to plug all the gaps, Elgar bunts one just between the two gullies for four, which takes the Proteas to 100. Bairstow then yells an appeal for a catch behind - but he's the only man appealing. You can tell when even Broad isn't yelling for a review to be used, it probably wasn't out.

Here's one of those attractive cover-driven fours from Temba Bavuma:

36 minutes of play left tonight - then 98 overs tomorrow

The close catchers come in as Moeen bowls to Bavuma - including a silly point right in his eye-line. Bavuma, who batted well in the first innings as the lower order collapsed around him, plays out a maiden over.

Elgar has taken the blows and got stuck in again. He looked to get forward which is always tricky when you have been hit on the gloves.

    Target 492

Bavuma plays forward, England appeal for a catch behind... bowler Stokes wants a review, but Root turns his back on his vice-captain. And it's a good decision by the skip, as replays show it brushing the pad rather than the bat. (And, let's not forget, credit where credit's due - a good decision by umpire Aleem Dar). Bavuma rotates the strike, Elgar does well to jam his bat down on a brute of a yorker, but holds firm to guide a four wide of mid-on.

    SA 91-4

Elgar reaches his ninth fifty (in 38 Tests, with seven hundreds - a good conversion rate), with a single - he also allows a smile (or is that a grimace?) to cross his face.

I've noticed Moeen is cocking his wrist which is just giving him a bit of nice drift, it just bananas out nicely.

43 minutes of play left tonight - then 98 overs tomorrow

Off-spinner Moeen Ali to take up the attack post-drinks, and there's the odd yelp from the close fielders whenever he beats the bat. Bavuma dabs a two to third man and steers a four through the covers.

Right, I'm going to take a call here. There's no way England are going to get 14 more overs in by 19:00 BST - so realistically, it's 43 minutes for SA to survive tonight, plus 98 overs tomorrow.

And to prove we're not biased, for the Proteas fans out there, here's a four from the gritty Dean Elgar.

While drinks are supped, take a look at the four wickets to fall so far in this innings - including the last three which went bang, bang, bang.

Elgar might have been thinking he could have no finger left if it kept hitting him so at least he could have a bit of a swing. The drinks are coming on and Elgar might need a brandy, he must have been hit six times.

Minimum 15 overs left tonight if they can be bowled by 19:00 BST

Bright blue skies over The Oval now - sadly they won't be able to continue beyond 19:00 BST tonight unless England grab a handful of wickets and can take the extra half-hour. Elgar pulls Stokes - not where he intended, it hits the toe-end and bounces past the stumps for four. A single takes him to within one run of one of the more gritty half-centuries of the series. Bavuma moves to six.

    Roland-Jones 7-1-20-1

The diminutive Bavuma stands tall (well, as tall as he gets) to cut Roland-Jones and they run three. Elgar doesn't score many runs through mid-on, as Michael Vaughan noted a few overs ago, but he helps himself to a three. Bavuma's prod is beaten by a beaut of a delivery of perfect line and length, that almost deserved a wicket on its own.

I've been as impressed with Roland-Jones here as I was in the first innings. Then the ball was zipping around there was drizzle, in this innings he has bowled a bit quicker.

More defiance from Elgar. His bowling may not have many variations (groan), but South Africa could have collapsed like a house of cards without him. He gets a rare reward as he pulls a loose Stokes delivery for four.
