If you look at the last 12 months - which is since he made his IPL debut - Amla averages 35.

I think Amla has got himself out a few times through playing one-day cricket. I understand every player would like to play IPL because it pays huge money, I'm not critical of that, but in that format you have to manufacture hitting a good ball for four, it creates bad technique for playing a Test match. There's no technique for T20, there's skill, but it's just getting runs. Amla is not quite as good as he was because of that.

    Target 492

Stuart Broad is not only out of the attack, he's off the field as England make a double change in the bowling, with Ben Stokes coming on for James Anderson at the Pavilion End. He advances the South Africa score with two successive no-balls - maybe that's why Root wanted to push on past 490? Amla is on the defensive, while a beach ball in the shape of a map of the globe has strayed onto the outfield.

England will want three wickets down tonight. Three I think sets you up for tomorrow. It won't be as easy for Roland-Jones, the pitch is getting slower by the day.

Minimum 126 overs left in the game

England make their first bowling change - five-wicket hero from the first innings, Toby Roland-Jones (aka TRJ, aka Toblerone Jones etc - other chocolate bars are available) replaces Stuart Broad at the Vauxhall End. His first ball is wide down the leg side, but the rest of the over is quite probing - Amla works a single just past short leg.

(These notes about how many overs are left in the game, by the way, are based on the assumption that England actually get through their correct number of overs tonight. Not a given by any means).

It's not doing very much when the sun is out but if you keep hitting the length often enough something will happen on here.

Dan Wride‏: Liam Dawson should have stayed in the side just to get Amla out early tonight...

    Elgar 22, Amla 3

Anderson in for his sixth over - it'll be interesting to see how Root juggles his bowlers this evening - and Elgar is discomforted as the ball is trapped between his thigh guards. Even with that protection in place, that will hurt. With a massed slip cordon in place, there's plenty of room for Elgar to beat the solitary fielder in the off-side ring with a firm drive for four. He has 22 from 35 balls.

Amla seems to be happy to just protect his stumps and stay in, he's hardly picking the bat up and not really going forward or back. I like the idea of protecting your stumps but he's too good to be just static at the crease, he's got to move his feet.

Hashim Amla's Test average on the ground is 144. Unbeaten triple centuries do help the average a bit.

Fresh from his appearance on FaceBoycs Live(here's the link if you missed it),, external Geoffrey is back on TMS as Broad flicks Amla's trousers and the ball disappears for four leg byes. With a short leg in place, Amla has to fend off a lifting delivery but manages to drop the ball at his feet. Maiden over.

    Target 492

Anderson has Amla playing and missing, the bearded right-hander is hit on the thigh pad and there's an appeal from the slip cordon, but not the bowler. Then leftie Elgar's hit on the pad, this looked more promising... but pitched outside leg. England will be hoping to get an lbw decision soon, if only on a totting-up basis.

Dean Elgar, like Tom Westley, has sticky tape holding his helmet grille in place (though his tape is pink; Westley's is white). The left-hander jabs the ball down and it flies between third slip and gully for four. He didn't know much about where that was going. By contrast, the next ball produces a perfect forward defensive stroke - which goes straight to a fielder. Them's the breaks, as they say. Or do you make your own luck? A careful straight drive past the bowler brings him two.
