    Eng 274-7 (lead by 452)

Continuing the slow left-arm with the usual custodian, Maharaj, Roland-Jones strides down the wicket and gets an inside edge into his pad, it loops beyond the grasp of De Kock. Stuart Broad is padded up in the pavilion, it's a peculiar business.

Temba Bavuma's now been involved as a fielder in five run-outs in 23 Tests. By comparison, Jonty Rhodes was involved in eight in 52.

  3. Eng 269-7published at 75 overs

    Lead by 447

To continue the slightly surreal passage of play, it's the craggy-featured opening batsman Dean Elgar now with some gentle left-arm dibbly-dobblies but they can only squeeze out three singles.

Debutant Toby Roland-Jones is the new batsman, he hit four fours and a six in 25 in the first innings and then collected five wickets but I'm not sure he would have expected to bat again today. Bairstow plays out the Maharaj over. Maybe Toby can hit a six to take the lead to 450?

What we do know is that a declaration would now bring tea.

If they are trying to get to exactly 450 or more as a lead, it seems a bit arbitrary. This is just losing overs to bowl them out!

Moeen run out 8 (Eng 265-7, lead by 443)

Moeen is beaten by Temba Bavuma's direct hit from the deep. It wasn't exactly the Stokes-style flinging himself at the crease from Mo. He barely had his bat down.

  9. Umpire reviewpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

We could have a run out here as Moeen went for a second run.

You should do what the openers don't want. They won't want to have to bat before tea which gives the bowlers two chances against them. Joe seems a little cautious.

    When should you declare?

  12. Eng 264-6published at 15:24 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

    Lead by 442

Moeen is not going to play himself in and have a look at the bowling, he's quite happy to wield the willow. The left-hander gets off the mark with a delicate leg glance and then lashes one into the off side for two more. Joe looks a bit subdued with his hands in his pockets. Coach Bayliss is happy enough, smiling away, probably going to enjoy a nice slice of cake at the interval.

I suppose if you declare so that you go straight in for tea, you don't "lose" those two overs. Although the conventional method is to give them a tricky session before tea.

  14. Eng 255-6published at 15:20 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

    Bairstow 35, Moeen 1

Batting has looked very easy today, surely England are not going to rip through the South Africans as they did in those horrible conditions under the floodlights in the first dig? But still we have no declaration.

They'll have to declare in the next nine minutes to get them in before tea.

    Stokes b Morris 31 (Eng 251-6)

Stokes had just dispatched Morris around 15 rows back at mid-wicket for his first six but, attempting something similar, the stumps are disturbed. And yet still we go on as Moeen walks out at number eight. The lead is 429.

The formation England have gone with this week is so much better. Jonny Bairstow won't like me saying this, but I much prefer him at seven than at five. Look at Gilchrist who stayed at seven all those years.

  18. Eng 245-5published at 15:13 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

Here's one for the What Happened Next? round, Rabada dropping the ball on his way to the crease, it dribbles a few feet down the wicket before stopping and Bairstow playfully steps out to meet it, only to offer no shot as if leaving a ball at 90mph. Jonny then races through for two. OK Joe, we are now well past the highest ever score to win a Test.

Morris was so good at Trent Bridge, he bowled with aggression and consistency, but he's been all over the place this week. I don't think he's bowled two balls in the same place.

I always thought it was one of the nicest part of captaincy, waving people in when you declare.

  20. Eng 239-5published at 70 overs

    Lead by 417

Bairstow is such an admirable cricketer, always positive and purposeful. He collects two more boundaries off Morris, whose 10 overs have gone for 60. One is the most innovative steer through the gully. Captain Joe has disappeared but he has not called them in yet.
