  1. SA 26-1published at 16:40 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

    Elgar 12, Amla 2

Amla fell early in the first innings. What a breakthrough it would be if England could send him back quickly again tonight. Anderson gets one to rear up which strikes Amla on the right glove as he takes a hand off the bat, and they run a single. Elgar, who's batted positively so far, rotates the strike.

You feel this is the game with these two, if they are both still here tonight there will be a few sleepless nights. The good thing for England is it is still doing a bit.

Hashim Amla - who knows a thing or two about occupying the crease on this ground, after his triple century in 2012 - is in at first drop for South Africa, and is off the mark with a quick single. Elgar nudges a two off his legs to move into double figures, and there's warm applause for Broad as he takes his sunhat at the end of the over.

Daniel: Out of respect for Test cricket I hope that SA have a decent go at chasing this total instead of collapsing to 101-8 tonight.

You heard the death rattle from here in the headphones. He nipped one back before with the lbw shout but straight through a yawning gap and a good breakthrough for England, get the South African dressing room down.

Bowled him! Broad makes the breakthrough with one that nips back as right-hander Kuhn is comprehensively bowled through the gate.

To be fair, Jennings did owe Elgar a favour after the South African shelled the England opener yesterday.

    SA 21-0 (5 overs)

Left-hander Elgar punches birthday boy Anderson (today being his 35th) through mid-off for four. I wonder whether England dared to give him the "bumps" before play? Do schoolchildren still do that? Or adults, come to that? There's two moral victories for the "Burnley Express" as he gets one to zip past Elgar's forward prod - while the last ball is edged, in and out of Keaton Jennings' hands at third slip as he dives to his left.

It didn't look right to me, Joe Root doesn't like it and I think it struck him outside the line of off stump.

    Target 492

The bushy-eyebrowed Kuhn again finds the gap through the covers, lashing his second four of the innings. Broad is then confident of an appeal as Kuhn prods forwards - then suddenly everything's happening, and as England discuss a review, the ball squirms away and South Africa seal a single. Cap'n Joe isn't convinced - and replays show the ball hitting outside the line of off stump. And as he was playing a shot, that rules out any prospect of lbw.

England's late runs came quickly - even if the declaration didn't - and Jonny Bairstow's 63 off 58 balls swelled his average against South Africa to 56.1. Of those to have played 15 innings against the Proteas, only legendary pair Wally Hammond (62.5) and Jack Hobbs (60.1) have a better average.

    Kuhn 7, Elgar 4

Floodlights on, but it's still blue skies mixed with some dark clouds overhead as Anderson, with three slips and a gully stationed, begins his second over. A single from Elgar, then Kuhn has to get up on his tiptoes to force a single off his hip. England haven't really beaten the bat yet.

Stuart Broad in from the Vauxhall End, and Heino Kuhn opens with a single - as he did last over. Elgar knocks a single to leg, and Kuhn is going nicely as he threads a four through extra cover.

    Target 492

James Anderson from the Pavilion End. South Africa's Herculean task of scoring 492 - or surviving four sessions - begins nicely as Kuhn knocks the first ball for a single. Left-hander Elgar is hit on the thigh, England appeal but decide against a review - and the ball-tracker suggests it would be "umpire's call" for brushing the top of the stumps. Elgar helps himself to a couple more.

Well, if Root's delayed declaration was based on runs rather than time, South Africa are almost up with the required run rate.
