No-ones got close to 492 in Test cricket, but can England bowl South Africa out in four sessions?

  4. Postpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

Thanks, Jamie. Differing opinion on how many overs South Africa have to face. I've seen figures ranging from 138 to 143 quoted... let's play.

So we know South Africa need 492 to win, after England resumed today at 74-1 and added 239 runs. Returning to our chat during the rain breaks of last night, the answer to the question of the cost of a pint at The Oval is £5.20. I sampled my first ever Maori IPA last night on the way back to the digs, just for research purposes. It was a bit on the lively side but I'm happy to say it cost less than that.

Well, England have four sessions - and more than 130 overs, with 98 scheduled for tomorrow - to bowl out South Africa and take a 2-1 lead in the series, but to begin to answer the questions about whether they went on too long, here's Mark Mitchener for the rest of the day.

Jonny Bairstow's played very well, a really good innings. He scored comfortably and fluently, and it's a pity he got out at the end. They're going to have to play to save the game.

The highest score to win a Test match batting last remains 418 by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003. There have only been three scores of over 400 to win. The highest to win at The Oval is 263, which was a few years ago now, in 1902.

There are a scheduled 39 overs remaining today and 98 tomorrow. Have England got it right?

Easy game, this Test cricket eh Toby? Hit sixes, take wickets. He sweeps Elgar for a mighty six and then for another maximum with a glorious towering hit over long-on. It's great stuff but does Joe want a lead of 500?! It's time for the new ball in an over....

I'd never say to him "declare at 350" and give the opposition a chance to win. But maybe he'll learn when he gets more experience.

I'm with Richie Benaud on this - as an opening batsman, make me do what I don't want.

Fabulous innings again from Jonny. He reaches his 16th Test fifty in his 41st match, reverse sweeping Elgar to the boundary behind square. His proud mum looks on in a buttermilk cardigan, it's a bit parky under these cloudy conditions and the lights are still on.
