  1. Man of the matchpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

England all-rounder Ben Stokes - was that his best Test hundred? "I had to work really hard, with the wicket offering a lot to their bowlers, particularly for Vernon Philander. We put ourselves in a great position with that first-innings score. I'll always try to play positively, whether that be in attack or defence, and it came off this week."

On Moeen Ali's hat-trick: "I couldn't believe it didn't get given straight away! A dramatic end to a dramatic day - Dean Elgar hit a really gutsy hundred and it was good to see the back of him, so congratulations to Mo. The last spell I bowled at Trent Bridge was a big confidence boost, I've worked hard with our bowling coach Ottis Gibson. We start again on Friday,"

  3. No excuse - du Plessispublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    BBC Test Match Special

More from South Africa captain Faf du Plessis on TMS: "From a batting point of view our consistency was lacking.

"You have to get through those conditions, there's no excuse, you have to limit to damage. It put us so far behind and we had to do something special to come back.

"You try and make sure the umpires understand it's a little unfair because it's really tough, but as the new laws state it has to be dangerous, so you have to get on with the job."

  4. Captain's viewpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

England skipper Joe Root: "What a way to celebrate the 100th Test at this ground. I think the way we batted in the first innings was really important and set a good benchmark for us. The way we bowled first up was exceptional. Alastair Cook's innings was crucial - we could have gone five or six down but the way he played was brilliant, he knows his game and played accordingly.

"At no point have we made excuses - we know Trent Bridge wasn't good enough, we've responded. Dawid Malan would have wanted to score more runs, but he got two good balls, and the other two made great contributions. It was great to see Toby Roland-Jones come in and take it like a duck to water."

Elgar's 136 is the third highest score for South Africa in the fourth innings of a Test.

  6. Captain's viewpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

More from South Africa captain Faf du Plessis - did he want another warm-up game between the Tests? "We didn't have that option. The obvious things that we did in the first and the third Test, obvious mistakes have been made and their bowlers were exceptional. The end of day two was probably the most difficult conditions you'll see in Test cricket. It's been a strange series - mistakes were made in this Test, we don't have to scratch our heads about what to do. Dean's knock was amazing, and something our batters can look towards to make sure they go out and fight. We lost most of our main batters yesterday but the guys fought really well today so there are positives to take. Dean showed us what was needed."

  7. Captain's viewpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis: "It's obvious to say that someone like Vernon Philander missing out on that first innings was costly, so they got 100 runs too many in that innings, but you have to say the English team batted well. Vern is one of those world-class performers that you'd almost take him at 50% - the plan was to win the toss, bat and give him a day to get better, so not to have him for day two and three was also a big loss to our bowling attack as we didn't have that consistency."

  8. Cook showed England how to play conditionspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

After Trent Bridge it was important that someone set their stall out to remind England how to play in those conditions - Alastair Cook did that very well.

The intent of the England team this week, the effort, they looked prepared to put the hard work in. We want to see that on a consistent basis - as soon as they lose the toss.

Bowling first in English conditions, England have to get better at that. We will see who wins the toss at Old Trafford because clearly it's had a big impact on the teams.

  10. We were embarrassed last week - Stokespublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    BBC Test Match Special

Man of the match Ben Stokes speaking to TMS: "In terms of getting through the hard periods and cashing in at the end, it was very pleasing. To get a good score on the board was crucial as well."

On Moeen's match-winning moment: "As soon as it hit him on the pad it looked out. It was an obvious one to review and added to the drama at the end of the day. What a way to finish with a hat-trick. It was a pretty good feeling."

On bouncing back from defeat last week: "We take more away from how we feel as players in terms ofhow we play, so the comments in the media hurt but we were more embarrassed about how we did perform last week.

"That's totally forgotten now, as will this be when we build up to next week.

"We always look to play the same way, be positive, attack and make the right calls."

Interesting to ponder, I know you can only beat what's in front of you, if Steyn and De Villiers had played in this series, what kind of an outcome we would have seen? Possibly their two best players?

    Ed Smith
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

The conditions on the first day with overhead cloud and lights on was the moment England had to play really well, they did so and set it up from there.

We are seeing a side that can construct a first innings in an old-fashioned way, show resilience. It's a great bounce back after an abject performance at Trent Bridge.

Dean Elgar looked as if he would never get out, the craggy left-hander making 136 from 228 balls, but finally he was the eighth wicket to fall. He has actually made four single figure scores in his last seven innings - and two fifties and now a hundred in the other three.
