  1. England rewarded for being bravepublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

England will be in that dressing room absolutely ecstatic. This time last week when they lost at Trent Bridge they had been very poor and were rightly criticised.

It was tough, but quite often when it is tough you do get rewarded for being brave. They certainly have been.

Jukebox Jack: Well done that man Andrew Samson on an excellent display of commentator's curse. There has been four first-ball ducks now!

Jon Room: Yes, Moeen. Hat-trick via technology on the third attempt. Gotta love Test cricket. Well played England.

Bowser: Make Moeen Ali king of the world immediately!

The ninth South African wicket to fall was Kagiso Rabada, who, like Elgar, edged Moeen to Ben Stokes at slip.

The sensational denouement is the 43rd Test match hat-trick, the 14th for England and the first against South Africa since 1958. There are no shortages for the Champagne Moment in this match but Moeen must be favourite, can't be much better endings than a hat-trick to win the Test.

We're still catching up with all those wickets but here is the big one when the granite-like Elgar was finally removed.

Paul: Can't believe the umpire hasn't given that first time! Robbed Moeen of hat trick celebrations. Absolutely plumb.

Daniel Warburton: Was so happy with Moeen's hat-trick I jumped into the air, momentarily forgetting my broken foot!

Carl Carritt: Hat-trick for our second spinner. Not bad. Imagine what our first spinner would've done? Double hat-trick...

It was ticking all three boxes and hitting leg stump and Moeen is being lifted in the air by his teammates. Moeen has a stump, is that his little boy in a sun hat in the crowd cheering as proud as punch? Fantastic stuff. England take a 2-1 lead in the series into the final match at Old Trafford starting on Friday.

It's a hat-trick and England have won by 239 runs. That's the way you do it!

England want a review for lbw - is this a hat-trick?!

There's quite a few innings where there have been three first-ball ducks, but there's never been four.

  14. SA 252-9published at 14:25 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    Maharaj 24, Morkel 0

Maharaj plays out a Stokes maiden and it will be Moeen, who is being given a pep talk by Stuart Broad, placing his hands on his shoulders, to bowl a hat-trick ball to Morkel.

That was an even more straightforward catch, and it's the third time in this innings South Africa have lost two wickets in two balls.

    Rabada c Stokes b Moeen 0 (SA 252-9)

Gone first ball, a simpler catch for Stokes. It's the end of the over so will Moeen get the chance for a hat-trick? Morne Morkel is the last man.

Elgar has held South Africa's innings together - it's one he won't forget, but it's going to be in a losing cause. From Moeen Ali's point of view, that's a really good wicket. You talk about Chris Jordan being England's the best fielder at slip for the spinner, but Ben Stokes rivals him.

WICKETpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    Elgar c Stokes b Moeen 136 (SA 152-8)

The big wicket. It was wide, he had a bit of a tired, flat-footed drive at it - it was his 228th ball faced in fairness - and it was nonchalantly taken at slip by Stokes, such a crucial factor to have superb catchers. Elgar has to drag himself from the field, a warm ovation from the crowd and there may have been an understandable naughty word from the batsman.

The second new ball will be key, as the new ball has taken wickets in all four innings.

  20. SA 252-7published at 75 overs

    Elgar 136, Maharaj 7

England's talisman Ben Stokes returns from the Pavilion End. Maharaj only has to face one ball in the over, there are four slips but it barely pitches on the cut strip. Five overs until the new ball.
