Dean Elgar is just looking at the bottom hand that has taken a pounding but he'll carry on and if anyone ever deserved a hundred it's him. He knows that if South Africa are to get out of this Test match he'll need to be there at teatime and maybe beyond.

    Elgar 85, Bavuma 26

Elgar is in the wars again, wearing a painful blow on the bottom hand from Stokes. But when Stokes tries to bounce him, the erstwhile Somerset opener pulls him for four. So Stokes tries it again - with the same result. "You dare to bounce me, sir? Take that!". If only more of his team-mates had Elgar's attitude...

  3. Aussie pay dispute over - or is it?published at 11:19 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

While Australia's Daily Telegraph is reporting, external that peace has broken out in the Aussie pay dispute, ABC is reporting that it's not all cut and dried yet (see below)...

England need six wickets to win

Elgar is progressing in singles, Bavuma seems assured of where his off stump is located as he shoulders arms, and when Broad strays onto leg stump, Bavuma effortlessly whips him through mid-wicket for four.

It's almost an area England can target because Elgar does lean over a bit and he might get a little feather to the keeper.

    Minimum 95 overs left today

Bavuma managed 16 from 59 balls last night, he's added six from his first six of day five as he drives Stokes for another three. Aside from that non-review last over, there's been no hint of any breakthrough so far.

The reviews were brought in to get rid of the howler, that wasn't a howler. This Test match there looks like more interaction between the bowler and the keeper and if the captain feels they are a bit unsure he walks away. It's a lot better.

New ball available in 40 overs

Stuart Broad will join Stokes in attempting to probe South Africa's defences early on. Running in from the Vauxhall End, he appeals for a strangle down the leg side against Elgar, but doesn't convince his captain to go for the review. But UltraEdge suggests there may have been the tiniest of tiny nicks off the bat (a squiggle which couldn't have been caused by anything else) before it was gathered by the keeper... Broad won't be happy. Reprieved, Elgar gets a better contact off his legs and they run two.

And with 40 overs gone we're halfway through the use of this ball - a new one will be available midway through the afternoon. If the game lasts that long.

    Minimum 97 overs left today

England hand the first over to their talisman, the self-styled "firestarter", Ben Stokes. He has three slips, a gully and a helmeted short leg in place for the right-handed Temba Bavuma, who helps himself to the first runs of the day with a three through mid-wicket. His partner, the left-handed Dean Elgar, adds a single. One down, 97 to go.

Nice to see a five-day Test match actually require the fifth day - although you'd imagine that without the rain and the 80 odd overs lost this would have been over within four.

And plenty of overs lost through slow over-rates - they were eight short on one day...

And if South Africa can see it out, I fear for their fans' stress levels.

I was there watching England at Auckland in 2013 when Matt Prior anchored England's gritty draw with an unbeaten 110, helped by Stuart Broad's backs-to-the-wall six from 77 balls - but it needed the unlikely figure of last man Monty Panesar to help bat out the last few overs.

Now, as you may have gathered, I love Monty to bits - but I aged several years over the course of those last overs, sitting surrounded by Kiwis in Eden Park.

Only three teams have started the fifth day with four wickets down and drawn the Test. They are England against South Africa in 1995 and against New Zealand in 2013. South Africa also did it - in 2013 against Australia in Adelaide. No team has achieved it by starting the day five wickets down.

England need to take three openers to Australia and they need to make a decision on Keaton Jennings now. Either he's going or not. You want to look at an opener against this high-class South Africa attack, so Mark Stoneman should get his chance at Old Trafford. I think he's slightly ahead of Haseeb Hameed at the moment. But Hameed's time will come.
