Eng 121-3
Hawk-Eye has is clipping the bails, but it's umpires call. Root survives.

It's nipped back quite a long way...
Eng 121-3
South Africa took some time to review it, but they've gone upstairs. Rabada hits Root on the pads, looks a bit high, but we'll see. Original decision is not out.
Root squeezes a short one from Marahaj past point for the only run of the over.
Grey and overcast in Manchester. I wonder, if the rain comes, and the covers come on, will the groundstaff also pull on the covers for those fans watching from the bed on the boundary edge?

This is one of those parts of the game where, if England lost two wickets, it wouldn't look too clever. If they just bat, pick up runs, they don't have to smack it all over then at tea, 150-3 looks good.
Nice set up you have there, Ben. Happy flying.
Malan, stands up straight, waits for the ball, then gets down and drives through the covers for four.
The Middlesex man is far from convincing off the final ball of the over, flashing at a wide one in an ugly looking shot, taken behind the stumps by de Kock.

Root 18, Malan 5
Maharaj to continue to Malan. First one is left, the second one is defended solidly and the third one is nicely played fine off the hips for two.
Root then finds the boundary by guiding the ball down to the fine-leg boundary with a delicate sweep.

Joe Root would have been furious with himself if he'd got out playing that shot. A sign how your concentration can lapse after a long delay.
All our thoughts are with the gentleman who was in the crowd, and we hope he's okay. An ambulance has just left the ground as play resumes. Root flashes at a wider delivery from Rabada and gets a thick edge that flies away for four.

The fourth umpire came into the crowd, while Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn came to see what was going on.

Unsteady on his feet, the chap is being helped from his seat. Medical staff were here very quickly.

The police are here now, but the man, previously unresponsive, is talking to the medical staff. Better news.

Very worrying and distressing scenes in the seating in front of the pavilion. An older gentleman is clearly unwell, being tended to by paramedics. The fourth umpire has come over for an update.
The drinks break gives us another chance to watch this fine, fine catch by de Kock to dismiss Westley.

There's a lot of gardening going on on this pitch. Root seems a little surprised by Rabada. He's skiddy, with a quick arm action.
Root hasn't looked all that convincing against Rabada, who is getting the ball to nip back.
The seamer has a half-hearted appeal for LBW as he find the back pad of Root yet again, but this time it is courtesy of an inside edge.
Time to re-hydrate with a drinks break.

This is going to be a big trial for Malan now. A true litmus test for an England five is three down after mini collapse.

There we go, both players off the mark.
A single into the off side for Malan and then a glorious cover drive from Root. He gets right under it and it races through to the boundary. Textbook.
Some turn for Maharaj finds the outside edge of the England captain's bat but it goes past slip for a single.
A bit looser from the South African and Root belts one through point for three, bringing up the 100 for England.
