  1. Eng 85-1published at 34 overs

Cook squeezes one out to the leg side for two, the only runs to come from that Olivier over.

The 50 partnership is up between this Essex pair, they're going along very nicely.

We're getting lots of tweets and texts in reply to Simon (13:28 entry) who suggested dropping Cook. It's safe to say that suggestion wasn't a popular one.

Vernon can't seem to make it through series at the moment. His body isn't fit enough. Yes, it's been an issue before, but it's becoming now that he can't finish tours. There are some tough questions the team need to ask themselves.

  3. Eng 83-1published at 33 overs

Maharaj v Westley battle continues. A glorious four to end the over as Westley plays against the turn and finds the gap, the ball racing through to the long-on boundary. Well placed.

The Lancashire legends are out in force as the TV cameras pan to Neil Fairbrother. What a gifted player he was.

It was interesting to see at The Oval, how deep Cook batted in his crease, and now he's changed that here. I'd like to talk to him to know why. He's had a real battle with Morkel here. They've tested each other's skills.

  5. Eng 79-1published at 32 overs

    Cook 41, Westley 19

    Alastair Cook punishing Olivier.

Firstly, he gets down low and squeezes one through the covers. Nice shot.

He follows that with a punch down the wicket for two. He's done that a couple of times today, a couple of steps back into his crease and a defensive shot which is timed to almost perfection.

Olivier goes back of a length and Cook pulls for another boundary, beating the man in the deep.

I prefer to see Olivier bowling from the Anderson End. The wind coming across will help his swing and he's able to hold his position a little bit more.

  7. Eng 67-1published at 31 overs

Keshav Maharaj with his slow-left arm and a hint of turn after lunch but Westley behind it well. England yet to get off the mark after the break.

Haseeb Hameed, in his full Lancashire gear, is in the dressing room having a chinwag with Joe Root. Wonder what they're chatting about.

  8. Eng 67-1published at 30 overs

There is only one Duanne Olivier (as far as I know), and he is the the only wicket-taker today.

Olivier continues from the James Anderson End with six tight deliveries to Cook.

A good line outside off and the ex-England captain opts to leave. Maiden.

On a side note, did you know there are two Ryan Sidebottoms? I didn't.

Anyway, play is about to restart at Old Trafford.

Daniel: Westley looks good so far. He doesn't have to come in playing big shots, he just adds some much needed grit to our top order

Hit the bad balls, leave the good ones. That's Tom Westley.

The Essex man has the highest leave percentage rate (36.8%) in this series whilst also possessing the highest percentage of runs coming from boundaries (77.7%).

16 of his 19 runs so far today have come from fours. He's looked solid.

Simon Rushbrook: Is dropping Cook too far fetched an idea to solve the top order issue?

Good old Alastair Cook. The former skipper has batted patiently today and rarely looked troubled.

He says he has found new motivation to carry on playing Test cricket and he looks to be enjoying life in the middle. This punch down the wicket was just effortless.

Jennings nicked a decent Duanne Olivier delivery and made his way back to the dressing room for just 17.

One more innings to save his spot as England opener?

Here's a picture of Moeen Ali having a net this morning. Back foot, belted through the off side. Probably out of the middle. England will aim to build the perfect platform for some Mo magic tomorrow. Thanks to Tim Oscroft - of this parish - for the photograph.

    That's blown my mind, Ben.

Jennings scored three boundaries this morning, but you could see he was a man low in confidence. So much so that the crowd would cheer every time he made contact with the ball. He got away with one here, a short leg would have had him.

  18. BBC secures Ashes radio rightspublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 4 August 2017

A bit of good news coming in for all you TMS fans, the BBC has won radio rights to broadcast cricket in Australia for the next five years.

That means you will be able to listen to live ball-by-ball commentary of England men's 2017/2018 tour down-under, with the first of five Tests starting in November.

England and Australia will also meet in the first women's day-night Test in Brisbane this October, followed by three Twenty20 internationals.

The deal between the BBC and Cricket Australia includes all international women's and men's cricket in Australia and rights for the Big Bash League and Women's Big Bash League Twenty20 competitions, up to the 2021-22 season.

It started off well for the under-pressure 25-year-old Jennings, a four off the pads to get off the mark.

Cheers Amy. Right then, England one wicket down after that first session, with Keaton Jennings departing.

Will he be departing on that plane to Oz this winter? Let me know your thoughts.

Time for some of the best bits of today ...
