  • Cook & Root add 248 from 39-2

  • First match of three-Test series

  1. 50 runs

    50 for Root - Eng 130-2published at 35 overs

    Cook 56, Root 51

Jason Holder brings himself back into the attack and .... that's 50 for the opposing captain. How many more times will Joe Root do this? He doesn't look like he's in incredible touch but, before you know it, he has reached his half-century. This time it's a cut/top-edge for four, before he raises his bat.

Coming back to brotherly love in cricket. I once faced my brother in a village game in Kent. I bowled him a beamer. I didn't mean to. I swear. I don't condone it.

Kyle Hope, who made his Test debut today, and Shai Hope are the fifth pair of brothers to play a Test together for West Indies. The others are:

    • Rolph & Jackie Grant
    • Jeffrey & Vic Stollmeyer
    • Fidel Edwards & Pedro Collins
    • Dwayne & Darren Bravo

Textbook Alastair Cook. He rocks forward and times a full delivery through mid-wicket for a boundary.

This ball doesn't seem to be doing all that much, the occasional swing but nothing threatening. It's a pink ball. Did you know that? Not sure if anyone mentioned it.

I like Roston Chase's pace. He's getting some good carry and a little bit of turn. He just needs to tighten that line up, to be a bit more threatening. He has a solid action but he doesn't give it as many revs as you'd like to see.

  5. Eng 122-2published at 33 overs

Roston Chase adjusts his gold chain, before being clipped off the pads by Root for a single down to square leg. Just a slip and short leg in place, as Cook plays it square for one more.

I said earlier that Joe Root was struggling with his timing but he'll be happy to be facing balls like this - wide and full from Chase and it's a complete gift, steered through the off side for four.

Respect to Stephan, who upon being asked to cover the cricket appears to taking pics of buses and unsuspecting revellers instead while clearly remaining close to a beer queue at all times.

A slight delay in play as there are some helicopters flying over Edgbaston. The noise from the choppers doesn't distract Cook and Root too much as they continue to go about their business. Better from Cummins as he shows glimpses of quality, but is very inconsistent with his line. England don't look troubled.

Stuart Law was talking about the West Indies' tactics of targeting the new batsmen in the order, and they've done that. But now, this is where you need to do your work, to get rid of these two.

  9. Eng 115-2published at 31 overs

    Cook 51, Root 41

This dinner/tea debate is still going strong I see. It's almost as heated as the England opener debate.

Four for England, as Chase finds turn but the ball glances off Root's pads and trickles down to the fine leg boundary.

It's tricky in the Midlands as dinner is called tea, so in theory you could have two tea intervals!

This is pretty ordinary bowling from Cummins, he is struggling to get his line right. I wonder how many of the deliveries today would be given a wide in limited overs. Cook, as we have seen him do for many years, latches on to the smallest amount of width and tries to cut through point, but can only find the fielder.

Crowd are getting louder - there's some burglars being chased by the police. Don't fear, it's just some ladies and gents in fancy dress.

It's a bit niche, but I'm willing to say this is the best view from a concourse I've ever seen.

  13. Eng 110-2published at 29 overs

    Cook 51, Root 40

West Indies continue with spin as Roston Chase bowls to Cook. It's a proper gimme first up, a lofty full toss and it should be sent crashing through the covers, but the England opener can't connect. A single to Cook brings Root on strike - he sees off the rest of the over.

A bit of bounce and turn for Chase. We're all so unsure as to what this ball will do that we'll analyse every single bit of movement.

The sun is shining in breezy Birmingham as Miguel Cummins sorts out his marker and races in to bowl at Joe Root. Three back of a length deliveries, well outside off and Root happy to leave. Straighter from Cummins and Root dabs it back to the bowler.

An unconvincing play and a miss from Root, he was fortunate not to get any bat on that.

Right, the second session is due to begin. I may, at some point, refer to the first session of the day as 'this morning' - I'm sure you'll forgive me, force of habit. But I'll try not to. Cook and Root walking to the middle, here we go ...

England scored at four runs per over in the first session, including 22 boundaries. Cook has shared a 69-run partnership with skipper Joe Root. It's been a good recovery.

Root's timing hasn't necessarily been at its best, but he's also not looked like getting out.

Steve Davies: Perhaps it's time, if the three new lads fail again this series, to bring back some experience in the shape of Ian Bell.

Gareth Powell: Alex Hales would be my number one choice! He played very well in South Africa last year.
