Yes, West Indies are a young side but they showed basic cricket knowledge. Their one chance was the new ball, to give themselves some momentum. But they got the tactics wrong by not taking the new ball straight away.

West Indies bowling coach Roddy Estwick, speaking to Sky Sports: "We didn't have one of our better days. We were poor. If you are conceding 53 boundaries in a day it shows a lack of discipline. We would bowl three or four good balls then a poor one.

"We needed to hit our lengths hard and we knew it was going to swing in the twilight, but we didn't execute our plan. It was a lack of concentration and we need to learn from it very quickly.

"We discussed that after 80 overs we would need to take the new ball as quickly as possible, but we didn't take it so we had to send a quiet reminder to the captain. It was disappointing."

It was fascinating to see the amount of hype and excitement about the ball, but there's been hardly any movement or seaming around. It would have been nice to have learned a lot more about Westley and Stoneman today. Tomorrow we will see more and more runs - it is going to be a tough time for West Indies.

More from Joe Root: "Generally, we found the older it got, the easier it was to see. The twilight period didn't go well for me but for the guys at the back end there - that seemed to be the danger period in other games, and the guys at the end did really well.

"It didn't do a huge amount but it wasn't very consistent, and you would get balls that didn't move, before all of a sudden you got one with more shape. Today I felt there was a bit there.

"It's been frustrating, the past two or three years, for me, to not kick on enough. You want to lead from the front and I'm really pleased with how today went."

I'm all for innovation. Test match cricket needs to do things to regenerate the crowd. But the product today was poor. England played nicely, especially Root and Cook. However, it wasn't a great day as a spectacle.

I want to see day-night Tests to be played more often in this country, one every year. But it was a poor contest. West Indies bowled so badly. We didn't find anything out about the pink ball today because of the way West Indies bowled.

England captain Joe Root, who made 136, speaking to Sky Sports: "Today was about making sure if we got into a position of strength and drive it forward. It's something we did well in the last two games and to do it today is brilliant, but it'll mean nothing if we don't back it up tomorrow.

"We did practise at different points in the day to make sure we had all areas covered. I know it's simple, and boring, but all we tried to do was do the basics well. We went in with an open mind and played the situation in front of us.

"After the start, it felt like a one-dayer, because we got off to a flier. It was about calming ourselves down. The atmosphere was electric and for Cooky to be 150 not out is great going into tomorrow."

The concentration from Cook to bat 90 overs, whoever you're facing, is remarkable. The routine that he produces ball after ball is just fantastic.

And then Alastair Cook followed suit, reaching his 10th score of 150, and doing it in typical Cook fashion.

We've seen already that batting at number four helps Root. In the five Tests we've seen him captaining, his batting seems exactly the same as we've seen over the past few years. He is Joe Root the batsman when he goes out to the middle, not the captain. He looked in fine form.

Tom Westley must be thinking it is one massive opportunity missed, playing such a poor shot. The two senior pros realised what was happening out there and decided to cash in against this kind of attack. Cook has bedded himself in to get a monster score.

A standing ovation from the England dressing and the Edgbaston crowd for Alastair Cook, who raises his bat in acknowledgement before meandering up the stairs. West Indies, meanwhile, look pretty downcast as they make their way off the field.

Dawid Malan gets off strike to Chase's first ball, before Cook clumps a single to watch the final two ball of the overs from the other end. Malan pokes the final ball up to cover, the fielder comes in - and misses it. A misfield to end the day. Oddly fitting.

The final over of the day is upon us, and it'll be Roston Chase to bowl it.

Incredible stuff. It's classic Cook, just doing the simple things. He's played so nicely off his legs today. He's such a solid rock. It doesn't matter about the conditions or the fanfare.

This is Cook's 10th score of 150 plus for England. And I couldn't tell you a single shot that he's played. He just accumulates runs so well. Kraigg Brathwaite is back on and he concedes just a single as Dawid Malan knocks the ball through point.
