Joe Root's century came up from 139 balls with 19 fours. It's his 13th Test century in 58 matches and his second against West Indies. He's currently scored 461 Test runs at 115.25 against the Windies.

He's helped himself to some easy pickings but England's skipper has done it again! His 13th Test century. He has paced himself so nicely throughout the innings, punishing the many bad balls. He reaches triple figures by sending a wide Chase delivery down to fine leg for four.

Has there been a rain delay or something today? Just wondering why we're playing on past 6.30... looks like a beautiful day at Edgbaston.

Kemar Roach to Alastair Cook. Some good length bowling by the seamer, his line isn't too bad either - on or around the off stump. The England opener blocks and dabs away six deliveries as we slowly approach tea. Can Joe Root reach his century before the break? Five or so minutes to go.

England are 200-2 and the best batsmen in the middle order haven't come in yet.

  6. Eng 200-2published at 52 overs

A single for Root off Chase takes the England captain to 94 and brings the 200 up for England. Cook and Root have done more than steady the ship since Westley's departure. They are completely dominating.

Just a slip in place. Cook easily finds the gap for another single.

Now is about the time you would expect anyone coming to the game to be arriving. It doesn't seem to be the case. The seats that were empty at the beginning of the game remain empty. There was no option of a twilight ticket - Warwickshire didn't feel it was necessary because the cheapest full-day option is £21.

  8. Eng 199-2published at 51 overs

Roach finds the gap between Root's bat and pad and it is caught by Shane Dowrich behind the stumps. Now then, we heard a noise - was there any bat on it? They decide not to review and it was the right decision not to, it just flicked the back pad.

More drama as there's an edge from Cook and it goes wide of Shai Hope at gully! Just out his reach.

That was the most threatening over we have seen from West Indies. Well bowled.

This is disappointing. You want West Indies to do well. These lads are trying their best but their discipline gets me.

  10. Eng 193-2published at 50 overs

    Cook 74, 91

England have hit 35 fours so far. If my maths is right, that's 140 of the runs coming via boundaries.

Two singles from the over. England's run rate is currently at 3.88. It's been around the four mark for most of the innings.

Jason Holder looks animated as he rearranges his field. I must say, he isn't the most vocal of international captains.

On another day, that goes straight to a hand and it's out. It was a horrible shot.

I think it may be called a nightcap, Jamie?

Ooh! That's the first time in this session that England have looked slightly troubled. Joe Root, looking to drive, offers a thick edge which flies through gully for four. Root ended up playing that one-handed.

The 150 partnership is up, Root is nine away from his century, England are eight away from their 200 and we are about 20 or so minutes away from tea, dinner, supper, whatever you call it.

They may well have another opportunity in the second innings, James.

Bend of the knees from Joe Root who cuts down past backward point for four. It seemed like he had all the time in the world to play that, there's a serious lack of pace in this Windies bowling/the pitch. The fast outfield isn't doing them any favours, either.

Another cut but this time Root plays it more square and it is picked up by the man in the deep, England limited to just a single.

Chris Duckworth: This Windies bowling attack really is pedestrian. Won't be a better chance for those needing runs to get them.

James Cardona: With Cook and Root scoring so freely against this attack, Stoneman and Westely have missed an opportunity to cement an Ashes place.

  16. Eng 181-2published at 47 overs

Kemar Roach continues as an uneventful over passes by. Alastair Cook, with his century in mind, content in defending the first few deliveries before a single to cover. Root helps himself to another single.

A bit of a lull in play here with England in complete control. Cook and Root are all smiles.

Biggest threat to Test cricket is not innovations like pink balls but the one-sided nature of the games. It's been a long time since England were involved in a close finish, win or lose.

Cook and Root both in the seventies.

A whip through point provides a single to Root, Cook clips off the pads for a run of his own. The England skipper then guides one past backward point for two more. A carbon copy of that delivery to end the over. Six from the over. Six easy, easy runs.

It's felt today like the senior pair of Cook and Root have had a middle practice. They've been under no pressure; they've just knocked it about. You can see in Cook's body language that he is here to grind it out and get a century.

  20. Eng 173-2published at 45 overs

A change in the bowling as Kemar Roach, the man who dismissed Mark Stoneman, returns to the attack. He's like an excited little puppy, jumping up and down as he thinks there is a lbw shout against Cook. It hit outside the line, it would have missed the stumps and I couldn't confidently tell you that it didn't take an inside edge. For all of those reasons, Holder decides not to review - wisely.

    A rare maiden.
