  1. Eng 195-1published at 27 overs

    Bairstow 73, Root 17

Is there anything the Windies can do here? Maybe some sort of heavy machinery could dig Bairstow out. Alzarri Joseph produces a pretty spicy in-swinging yorker, but Root still has the skill to guide it behind point for a single. The floodlights are really taking effect, dusk has arrived in Southampton. I still can't believe we're playing cricket when it is October in two days.

Matt, difference between red and white ball is one's red and one's white. Glad to help.

    Target 289

Rovman Powell, part-time medium-pace, is into the attack, just about ticking over the 70mph mark. Both Root and Bairstow are targeting the one side, Bairstow with a shimmy across the stumps, Root with a straight bat. There's not a great deal of atmos in Southampton - the crowd sense that this one is done.

A little bit of dew might come down and it can seam under lights, but it's a good track and you can't see England messing this one up.

  5. Eng 183-1published at 25 overs

    Bairstow 67, Root 11

Alzarri Joseph, only 20, is bowling with some decent heat - 85mph. He's tall - tall enough for the bottom of his trousers to be flapping around his shins in his delivery stride. Joe Root is keen to get on the front foot, but fails to pierce the inner ring. No matter. England have got plenty of time.

    Target 289

West Indies look like they want to be on the plane. An attempted Cummins slower ball bounces down the leg side, away from keeper Shai Hope for five wides. When Cummins gets it straight, there's an appeal for leg before against Root, but an inside edge could well have saved the Test skipper. Hello, what's happened here? The umpire calls over after five balls, so the players go round. At the last moment, word comes from the scorers, so we all go back to finish the set.

Can someone explain to me what the difference between the white and red ball is. When was the last time we saw an England opening stand of 100-0 in Tests?

Thanks, Kal. Evening, wherever you are. This is looking like a stroll for England, but one I want them to drag out. You can't help but feel wistful on the final day of the cricket season, especially when the sun is still shining so brightly. Let's cling on for as long as we can. The winter will drag on...

  10. Eng 162-1published at 22 overs

    Target 289

Test captain Joe Root is in and is off the mark with two worked towards the leg side. He has no issues in getting straight into the groove, scoring four from his first three deliveries.

So West Indies have the breakthrough but the damage seems to have been done.

That's all from me for today, here's Stephan Shemilt to see you through the rest of this match.

Well played, Jason Roy. He'll be disappointed, because it's always nice to get three figures. What a funny game. He hasn't had a great season, comes back in strange conditions and peels of an 86 and a 96.

Roy lbw Cummins 96 (Eng 156-1)

Oh no, four short of his century! I was certain he was going to reach three figures. Miguel Cummins, returning to the attack, bowls full and slow and it traps Roy in front. He considered a review, Bairstow told him it's not worth it.

Jason Roy swats Ashley Nurse back down the wicket for four more to take him into the 90's. Eight from the over. Jason Mohammed needs to make a change here, one last throw of the dice. Bring back the seamers. Do something. Anything.

Wallop! What a shot from Jason Roy, who jigs down the wicket and lofts it over mid-on for a six.

Bairstow's fifty came up off 48 balls, containing five fours. It is his seventh in ODIs, and his fifth in 10 innings this year.

    Roy 78, Bairstow 51

Five singles from Ashley Nurse's over. Easy work. Aside from the West Indies review, which remained not out on umpire's call, I can't think of a chance that England have offered or a time they have come close to losing a wicket.
