    Target 289

Jason Roy plays a defensive punch down the ground which should be four but is fielded well by the man on the boundary. The next one is four, though. Wide from Taylor and Roy slashes hard and slices it over a diving backward point.

He already has seven fours to his name. Not only that, he is turning singles into twos with some smart running.

Roy has to look at it as a chance to end the summer on a high. He started the year really well in India, but it didn't work him at the IPL. He spent a good amount of time not playing any cricket and was under pressure in the Champions Trophy.

  3. Eng 54-0published at 8 overs

    Roy 36, Bairstow 16

So West Indies have lost their only review of the innings.

Before that review, there was an absolute superb shot from Jason Roy, who chopped Cummins down to backward point for four. And he adds four more with an elegant drive to the long-off boundary.

It's just brushing the leg stump. If the umpire had given it out, Roy would have been on his way. It's a good length from Cummins. Before that, West Indies had bowled too short.

  5. Not outpublished at 7.1 overs

    Eng 48-0

He survives. There was no inside edge but the ball was only scraping the leg-stump. So umpire's call it remains.

Is that the end of Roy? Did it take an inside edge? Not out but Windies review.

You can see why England were willing to give Ben Stokes the authority of being vice-captain.

With that, though, comes great responsibility and those who have staked their reputations and that of the English game on Stokes have every right to feel concerned.

Now that England have acted swiftly to remove Stokes and Hales from international cricket for the immediate future, it seems very difficult to imagine Stokes being part of the upcoming Ashes tour.

    Taylor 4-0-12-0

That wind-up will never, ever get old. Brilliant.

Jason Roy looks like a man full of confidence as he drives down to long-off to run two. Such a contrast to the man we saw earlier on this summer.

Taylor's bowled pretty well so far but England have made a solid start.

Surely one of the best moments of this year was Aggers' wind-up of Boycs of his 100 Test hundreds.

    Roy 28, Bairstow 11

An early change in the bowling as Miguel Cummins replaces Alzarri Joseph.

Cummins, looking as cool as ever with both ears pierced, is greeted by four brilliant runs by Jason Roy. Short and wide and punched terrifically off the back foot. Too much width again from Cummins and Roy, almost on his tiptoes, swats it through the covers for four more.

That's what we want to see ... a Gayle dive/tumble on the ground at short extra cover to stop four.

Some chaps are dressed as Elvis in the crowd. It doesn't quite feel like a fancy dress vibe to me. A bit too cold and late in the year. But then again, it is a Friday.

Taylor with four dot balls to begin as Bairstow fails to get it past the fielders inside the circle. Bairstow with a dab and run as the Rovman Powell's throw is well backed-up, could have been four overthrows. One more single means Jason Roy will keep the strike.

    Roy 17, Bairstow 9

Alzarri Joseph, bowling in the high 80s, as Roy ends up playing a one-handed pull shot for two runs. The England and Surrey opener then plays a cross bat drive down to the right of Joseph for four, followed by another boundary as he pulls down to deep backward square-leg. Two well-taken singles to end the over.

    Joseph doesn't look impressed.

It's always the question with Chris Gayle - how long can you continue with him at slip?

  16. Eng 15-0published at 3 overs

Bairstow is so good between the wickets, it's a hit and run jobby as he scampers through for a quick single to short mid-on.

Jason Roy looks to drive off the back-foot and manages to run it down past backward point for another run. Not where he intended, but they all count. Bairstow squeezes the last delivery over to square-leg, timed well enough for two more.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Joseph, taking the new ball in the absence of Holder. Roy might have expected the short ball, he's been very good off the back foot.

  18. Eng 11-0published at 2 overs

    Roy 5, Bairstow 6

We saw a fierce side of Alzarri Joseph at The Oval and he starts where he left off, bouncing it in short and clonking Jonny Bairstow on the grill of the helmet. Bairstow nods and frowns to tell us he is fine.

Joseph bowls full and angling into the pads as Bairstow calmly flicks it through mid-on for England's first four of the innings.

Roy gets in on the act, pulling Joseph through the gap on the leg side for four more.

It's given the West Indies something to bowl at, they will feel they have a chance if they take early wickets. I reckon they are 20 or 30 short for me, but they do have a chance.

  20. Eng 3-0published at 1 overs

    Target 289

    Cheers, Justin.

Can England get off to a quick start? Jerome Taylor with the new ball, wide and on the up as Jason Roy cuts it down to a wide third man. Not the most convincing of shots but England are off the mark straight away. One more single added, Taylor getting the ball to talk a bit with some late movement but not much to trouble the England openers.
