But in the end it was captain who sealed the win.

That brought Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews to the crease who calmly saw his side home with an unbeaten half century in his first ODI since August 2016 following injury.

Mathews was helped by impressive knocks from Kusal Perera and Asela Gunaratne...

Sri Lanka started strong.

Danushka Gunathilak and Kusal Mendis hit impressive half centuries and looked comfortable.

But they teetered as both batsmen were run out within five overs.

Most of us thought India had enough after a 125 from Shikhar Dhawan and some MS Dhoni fireworks took India to 321 - the highest score of the tournament so far.

That was brilliant. The game of the tournament so far.

Everybody expected India and South Africa to go through from this group. Now we've got a situation where the final two games in the group are effectively quarter-finals. It's amazing.

That really puts the cat among the pigeons in Group B.

All four teams - India, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - have one win and two points from their two matches.

That means we're all set for effectively two quarter-finals in the last round of matches as India play South Africa and Sri Lanka face Pakistan.

India batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 125, speaking to TMS: "Sri Lanka played really good cricket. They knew the target and attacked us. We could have bowled better. Once I got out, I thought maybe we scored too slowly. We lost quick wickets and our run-rate went down.

"One bad match can happen anytime. If we need to change the first XI, that's the captain's job but we don't have to panic. We've been playing some good, consistent cricket. It's a big game against South Africa - do or die - so we're going to come back fresh and in a positive frame of mind."

Before the match, we spoke about working hard and we did that really well today. We have a good chance to qualify now so we look forward to the Pakistan game."

The way India play generally is too conventional.

Here is the winning moment for Sri Lanka plus that glorious Angelo Mathews drive to put them on the bring.

A great moment.

The biggest shock of this tournament by far.

Plenty of criticism will be put India's way after that.

Hindsight is great but they only scored 48 off the opening 10 overs. Then, did they kick on enough from 138-0 in the 25th over?

And what of their bowling? Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar took a wicket - the others falling to run outs - while Yadav, Pandya and Jadeja all went for more than six an over.

As you can see, Simon Hughes is not impressed.

I think India's bowling is over-rated. Jasprit Bumrah is something different and deceives batsmen but apart from him, and Umesh Yadav to an extent, their bowling is ordinary. For some reason, Ravindra Jadeja is ranked number one Test bowler in the world. That's more down to batting inadequacy than his ability.

This result has shown that India's batsmen aren't adventurous enough. They have to up the ante a bit. 320 is the old 250. Teams are chasing down scores of 320 with a fair degree or comfort and regularity.

Don't forget Asela Gunaratne, playing in just his 15th ODI.

He ended with 34 runs from 21 balls. He hit four boundaries, including this remarkable shot.
