Summary

  • Cook makes 193 off 280 balls

  • Browne hits 221 off 384 deliveries

  • Cook & Browne break Essex highest opening stand with 373

  • Day three washed out at Headingley & Durham

  1. Trent Bridge resumption at 17:45 BSTpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Notts 371 v Kent 180 & 105-4

They've mopped up in Nottingham and we're going to get some play.

55 overs will be bowled (if needed) and dinner will be at 19:30 BST.

Division Two leaders Notts need six wickets, Kent need to bat and bat.

  2. Scores level at Chelmsfordpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Essex 246-0 v Middlesex 246

The scores are level between Essex and Middlesex. The problem for the defending champions is that Essex haven't lost a single wicket.

Having both been dropped earlier, Alastair Cook (137 not out) and Nick Browne (105 not out) are looking good out there.

    Hug it out fellas...

  3. All eyes on Hameedpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Warwickshire 321 v Lancashire 273 & 21-1

With Jos Buttler already back in the pavilion following a bizarre promotion to open the batting, all eyes will be on Lancashire's youngster Haseeb Hameed.

The right-hander has been short of runs this season, failing to score a single 50 in the County Championship this season. His high-score is 47 and with England's opening Test against South Africa next week, this may well be last chance saloon for the batsman.

  4. Cricket klaxon!published at 17:03 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Sussex 358-9 dec v Gloucestershire 37-0

We finally have some play at Hove after the whole of yesterday was washed out.

Cameron Bancroft and Chris Dent resume with the willow for Gloucestershire.

The umpires are also inspecting at Trent Bridge. Lovely stuff.

  5. 'No enthusiasm for pink-ball cricket'published at 17:03 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Northants 261 & 60-3 v Leicestershire 157

    Alex Winter
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

It's been a very frustrating day at Wantage Road where since early afternoon it hasn't rained at all. Unfortunately the rain last night and this morning left a soggy outfield so we've been forced to wait for any cricket but play will start at 5.15pm with 63 overs scheduled.

Northamptonshire want to get back out there because they have a good lead and want to score at least another 100 in their second innings. Some talk of going on the attack against the swinging pink ball to try and do that.

No-one in the ground again - understandable due to the weather - and one hopes that the caveat of not being able to properly judge attendances given the cold and rain this week does not give the ECB an excuse for another pink ball round next year. There has simply been no enthusiasm for it from anyone I have spoken to.

Andrew Stone: It's a tall order, but if Cook plays till 40 he could conceivably get 100 f/c hundreds. Would probably be the last to do it.

He's supremely fit Andrew, so it might just depend on his desire to continue playing.

Hundred for Brownepublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Essex 238-0 v Middlesex 246

Nick Browne centuryImage source, Rex Features

There's the hundred for Nick Browne! The Essex opener smashes a long-hop from Paul Stirling to the mid-wicket boundary to move to 102 not out.

He becomes the seventh Essex batsman to reach the landmark this season, which just goes to show the whole side's form.

  8. Play resumes at Edgbastonpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Warwickshire 321 v Lancashire 273 & 13-1

Keith Barker bowled the first over after the interval in Birmingham.

It's Alex Davies and Haseeb Hameed at the crease for Lancashire with the game in the balance following Andy Umeed's gritty ton for the hosts.

BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt seems to think the Jos Buttler switch to open the batting was for tactical reasons. Bizarre.

  9. Finn gets things under waypublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Essex 226-0 v Middlesex 246

Steven Finn has the ball in hand and gets Middlesex under way against Essex following the resumption at Chelmsford.

Can they hold some catches in this session?

  10. More possible cricketpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

I am a lucky charm, it seems.

Play is due to start at 5.20pm at the Ageas Bowl! Somerset are 43-1 following Hampshire's curious score of 211-9 declared.

There is also a pitch inspection scheduled for 5pm at Trent Bridge, meaning Nottinghamshire may be able to push for a win against Kent, who are 105-4 in their second innings.

Things drying up?published at 16:39 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

Hello! I arrive - and break the 30-minute curfew set by Gary - with promising news (although I've known British weather and cricket long enough to be cautious).

Sussex and Gloucestershire are aiming for a 5pm start at Hove! Northants and Leicestershire are aiming for a 5.15pm start at Northampton!

The sunny image may be misleading, but we're taking small victories at this stage, with just two of the nine games playing.

  12. Postpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

So, with the players at tea at Edgbaston and Chelmsford, and no play anywhere else, I'll put things on hold for around 30 minutes.

Felix Keith will be in the hotseat for the second session.

Have a cuppa, and we'll be back shortly.

  13. Tea at Chelmsfordpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Essex 226-0 v Middlesex 246

    Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

Alastair Cook and Nick Browne added 120 runs for Essex in that slightly extended first session.

Cook goes to tea on 125, Browne is three short of his century.

    Middlesex are on the ropes.

  14. Postpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

Guess what? As soon as I'd finished typing that message it had begun to rain again at Hove. The wait for some cricket goes on.

  15. Sussex to resume at 4.30 BSTpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Sussex 358-9d v Gloucestershire 36-0

They'll try again at Hove. Sussex and Gloucestershire managed just 11 balls earlier, but if all goes to plan they'll be back out in the middle at 4.30pm.

A whopping 75.1 overs remain in the day.

Tune into BBC 5 Live sports extra now to listen to the thoughts of Jonny Bairstow and Kumar Sangakkara on day/night cricket.

Yorkshire and Surrey's game at Headingley has unfortunately been washed out, but this is a nice consolation.

  17. Tea at Edgbastonpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Warwickshire 321 v Lancashire 273 & 11-1

That's the end of the first session in Birmingham.

And what a good one it's been for Warwickshire.

After building first-innings lead of 48, Keith Barker removed Jos Buttler cheaply after he was promoted to open.

Haseeb Hameed, who is nursing a hand injury, then came in at three. I still have no idea why they swapped.

  18. 'Covers doing the hokey cokey at Hove'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Sussex 358-9d v Gloucestershire 31-0

    Adrian Harms
    Sports reporter, BBC Sussex

Players are taking an early lunch at Hove, where the covers momentarily came off but are now coming back on again.

With both sides needing a win the only way to a positive result will be for some imaginative declarations over the next couple of days.

  19. Record opening standpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 28 June 2017

    Essex 219-0 v Middlesex 246

Browne and CookImage source, Rex Features

Nick Browne and Alastair Cook now have the best opening partnership for Essex against Middlesex as they take it to 210.

Oh, but that's lucky for Browne. Toby Roland-Jones finds his outside edge with consecutive balls - both fly past the slips and down to the boundary to take the opener to 93.
