The art of wicketkeeping can involve a deft touch. Not in the case of Surrey's Ben Foakes during the morning session against Yorkshire - he made a right old mess of Shaun Marsh's stumps to send the Australian on his way.

  3. Covers still on at Edgbastonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Warwickshire 201 & 55-5 (24 overs) v Essex 369-9 dec

At Edgbaston there were suggestions that play would restart at 13:00 BST after a bit of rain and the early lunch, but that is looking unlikely.time has come and gone.

It is currently very dark and with more rain in the air the covers are still firmly in place.

Essex will be desperate to get back out there and finish the job, but they're going to have to wait.

  4. Hameed stands firm for Lancashirepublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Somerset 335 v Lancashire 133 & 89-1 (f/o) - lunch

A short break for rain may well have accounted for the only wicket of the morning session, as Alex Davies was caught and bowled by Jack Leach in the first over after a 10-minute delay.

It was the only blemish so far, as the Red Rose have shown excellent application to frustrate Somerset, and Essex for that matter.

Haseeb Hameed has barely offered an attacking shot in anger, occupying the crease and ignoring most balls outside off stump. He looks intent on giving himself the best possible chance to make another contribution, regardless of how long it takes.

  5. Kent 'must accelerate'published at 12:59 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Gloucestershire 385 v Kent 169-3 - lunch

    Matt Cole
    Sports Editor, BBC Radio Kent

Kent have made slow, but steady progress on the third morning at Bristol, but with victory vital to their slim promotion hopes, they’ll need to press hard on the accelerator this afternoon to try and build a first-innings lead.

For their part, Gloucestershire have bowled diligently on a slow pitch, with Liam Norwell finding life from a length to dismiss Daniel Bell-Drummond (58) and worry both not out batsmen Sam Northeast (37) and Joe Denly (48).

The latter hass passed a milestone this morning, bringing up 1,000 runs for his Championship season, and Northeast is just 18 runs away from four figures.”

  6. Dropped catches may cost Sussexpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Derbyshire 338 & 122-3 v Sussex 271 - lunch

    Adrian Harms
    Sports reporter, BBC Sussex

A frustrating morning for Sussex, who need to win this match to maintain their extremely slim chances of promotion

Derbyshire have batted sensibly, adding 91 to extend their lead to 189, but Sussex didn't help their cause by dropping Ben Slater behind when he was on 23.

Slater was eventually out for 45 to the pacey Stuart Whittingham, before Alex Hughes was also dropped in the slips just before the interval.

Given the recent fragility in the Sussex batting order, a lead of 250 plus may be enough for Derbyshire to claim their second Championship win of the season.

  7. Slender lead for Glamorganpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Glamorgan 207 & 136-4 v Northamptonshire 310

    Nick Webb
    BBC Wales Sport

Promotion challengers Northants struck at either end of the morning session to leave Glamorgan just 33 runs ahead at the break.

Rory Kleinveldt bowled a superb first spell of 2-8 in eight overs as he quickly dismissed overnight batsmen Jack Murphy and Jacques Rudolph.

Colin Ingram and Kiran Carlson then tried to dig in, with 19 year-old Carlson getting to 44 before he tried to pull Mohammad Azharullah and appeared to drag the ball on to his off bail.

Ingram was 25 not out when a sharp shower took the players off for lunch.

Freddie van den Bergh has had to wait a long time to make his Championship debut, but you know that saying, "good things come to those who wait"....

The left-arm spinner took his first wicket last night and straight away this morning had Shaun Marsh stumped for 78. Alex Lees played really well until he nailed a sweep off van den Bergh and Ryan Patel took a wonderful catch at square leg.

Van den Bergh then ran out Gary Ballance, as the Yorkshire skipper looked for a single that was never there. Quite a morning for him.

  11. Division Two updatepublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Joe DenlyImage source, Rex Features

Kent batsman Joe Denly has passed 1,000 Championship runs for the season, reaching 48 not out in his side's 169-3 at lunch against Gloucestershire. He and Sam Northeast (37*) have so far added 65 for the second wicket.

Glamorgan lose Kiran Carlson for 44, bowled by Azharullah, and are 136-4 in their second innings against Northants when rain forces an early lunch, just 33 runs in front.

Worcestershire reach the interval on 434-7 at New Road, 30 runs to the good against Leicestershire, with Ben Cox on 52 not out. Callum Parkinson now has 6-126 from 37 overs.

Derbyshire have extended their lead to 189 over Sussex at Hove, reaching 122-3 at lunch. Ben Slater was the last man to go, bowled by Stu Whittingham for 45.

  12. Livingstone off the markpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Lancashire 133 & 89-1 f/o (40 overs) v Somerset 335

Liam Livingstone has joined Haseeb Hammed in the middle after the dismissal of Alex Davies and gets off the mark with a couple on his eighth ball.

These two have got a lot of runs in recent weeks so Lancashire will be hoping the duo can get them up to the Somerset total.

  13. Key session to come at the Ovalpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Surrey 592 v Yorkshire 290-4 - lunch

Yorkshire add 119 during the morning session, but lose three wickets in the process and are 302 runs behind at the interval, with Jack Leaning 22 not out and Andy Hodd on 19.

In theory, anyone below second-placed Lancashire in the Division One table is not yet safe from relegation, so there is plenty for both sides to play for in the remaining five sessions.

  14. The wickets to fall at Edgbastonpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Warwickshire 201 & 55-5 (24 overs) v Essex 369-9 dec

Essex started the session knowing if they won and Lancashire lost they'd be county champions.

Right from the first over they bowled brilliantly and as they sit down for an early lunch they know they're halfway through their task.

  15. wicket

WICKET Davies (c&b Leach) 49published at 12:34 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Lancashire 133 & 82-1 f/o (36.4 overs) v Somerset 335

Somerset break through four balls after the resumption!

That break did indeed disrupt Alex Davies rhythm and the opener chips a caught and bowled chance back to Jack Leach.

He falls one short of his half-century. Essex's lunch will be going down a little bit better now!

  16. Play resumes at Tauntonpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Lancashire 133 & 82-0 f/o (36.1 overs) v Somerset 335

    Good news from Taunton.

The shower has blown over and the players are back out.

How will that short break effect the batsmen? There is just under half an hour to go until lunch.

  17. Surrey switch to seampublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Surrey 592 v Yorkshire 273-4 (83 overs)

Surrey have taken the new ball just before lunch at the Oval and suddenly the runs are coming a little easier for Yorkshire. Jack Leaning finds the boundary off Stuart Meaker and there are two in succession for Andy Hodd in the next over, bowled by Sam Curran. The Tykes are still 319 behind, though.

Here's a reminder of Gary Ballance's earlier dismissal. Jack Leaning might want to make himself scarce at lunchtime after turning down his captain's call for a single (assuming there was one).

Rain stops playpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Lancashire 133 & 82-0 f/o (36.1 overs) v Somerset 335

More rain! The players are now off at Taunton.

That has been a pretty good session for Lancashire as Haseeb Hameed (26 not out) and Alex Davies (49 not out) starting well following-on against Somerset.

It looks like rain and the Lancashire openers are both intent on delaying the title-winning party.

  19. Worcestershire set for leadpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Leicestershire 404 v Worcestershire 401-7 (95 overs)

Maximum batting points for Worcestershire with plenty of overs to spare at New Road, and they are about to move into a first-innings lead. Ben Cox is 41 not out, after being dropped at slip on nine. Callum Parkinson (6-103) is continuing to wheel away for the visitors.

  20. rain stops play

Rain stops play - Lunchpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Warwickshire 201 & 55-5 (24 overs) v Essex 369-9 dec

Essex are halted in their push for victory, not by Warwickshire's batting but by some drizzle.

The umpires take the players off and with lunch just 20 minutes away decide to fill their stomachs a little early.

Despite that frustration, it's a brilliant session for Essex. In 22 overs they've taken five wickets. Surely it's just a matter of time for them to win this match.
