    Stoneman 20, Vince 27

Mitch the mo returns to the attack, Stoneman equal to the task, defending and leaving well.

The fifth drifts down leg and Paine scramble across to cover before Stoneman bats back the last.

A maiden for Starc but still a few yards of pace for him to put on.

Lyon now at Vince, who covers the first four deliveries nicely.

The fifth turns a bit sharper and Vince rocks it round the corner for a single. The Hampshire batsman is looking in regal form out there.

Stoneman nudges the last out to wide long-on for another single.

As I sip my 3rd G&T of the night, sitting on my warm sofa, I recall vividly listening to the first session of the 1986 series from my cold horsehair mattress at boarding school. Chris Broad caught behind early on, but England's unfancied side prospered. I am just as excited 31 years on!

England have fought back nicely after losing Cook. Stoneman and Vince have had a reasonable tour to date. These were the two that I wanted to see how they'd go. Joe Root will want time to go further and further, and let the pitch settle a little bit more, before he goes out there.

    Hazlewood 8-3-24-0

Hazlewood directs a short ball at Stoneman that beats the Surrey man's defences and cracks his upper arm. It was more the lack of pace than pace that deceived Stoneman there.

Stoneman clips off his pads for a comfortable couple, accumulating nicely.

Nathan Lyon has taken 46 Test wickets at 21.09 in 2017 - the second most of any Australian spinner in a calendar year.

  9. Eng 45-1published at 18 overs

    Stoneman 17, Vince 26

Here is the 'career-ending' off-spinner - that's a decent ball first up, finding the thick outside edge of Stoneman's bat, but it runs away harmlessly enough in the end.

Stoneman plays the next four well enough before dropping the last one away through third man for a quick single.

Lyon has a chirp at the end of the over. Stoneman turns away laughing.

  10. Eng 44-1published at 01:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Hazlewood continues - it's all nice line and length stuff but nothing to trouble Vince, who calmly dismisses the over.

    Time for Nathan Lyon?

Ahnaf Tahmed Faiz‏: James Vince looks so, so good on the eye when he's in the groove.

Daniel Davies: I've already gone past my 1am limit. Might as well stay up for the rest of it now.

I tuned in specifically for 90mph bowlers. The Aussies are all talk.

A sedate end to the over after that brief flurry of excitement from the Aussie slip cordon.

It must have flicked the pad buckle. They all went up but they will be careful with reviews. The refunding of reviews at 80 overs has been removed now.

  15. Eng 44-1published at 01:14 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Cummins goes short at Vince who gets on top and rolls his wrists on the pull shot for a single before Stoneman dabs away for one.

Vince sees another opportunity for the drive, judges it well enough to crash it for three.

Cummins then slides one down leg and Stoneman wafts at it - Paine catches and the Aussies go up but nothing doing from the umpire.

Stoneman and Vince seem pretty composed, not nervous and they've been the pick of the batsmen on tour so far.

Watchful from Stoneman to Hazlewood - leaves one, pats a couple back, leaves another.

'Rocky' then sways away from a short but not particularly threatening delivery before leaving the last well alone.

    A maiden without menace.

I tend to think of Mitchell Starc as a bowler of great balls rather than a great bowler.

And yet he was starting to get a nice pitch map today - if he keeps consistent and then chucks in the great balls, he really will be a great bowler and that will cause alarm for England.
