  1. Eng 39-1published at 14 overs

Vince goes back and cuts away a shortish ball for a single, before Stoneman ducks under a Cummins bumper.

Another short one is just about fended off down leg by the Surrey opener for a single.

Ooof, Cummins gets a peach to beat Vince's bat - a strangled appeal for caught behind but fairly big gap there.

Cheers, Amy. Mammoth shift that, well played.

Mark Stoneman and James Vince are playing well too, both looking very assured so far.

Fittingly, I'm also making an Ashes debut (of a sort).

    Here we go...

And with that, I am off for food and coffee and maybe a snooze.

Jack Skelton will take you through the next few hours. In a bit!

There is a pool at the Gabba that you can watch the cricket from. Imagine the bodily fluids in there by the end of a day's play. Vince continues working the gaps as he drives Hazlewood through the off side for three. They're running very well together, this pair. Steve Smith applauds furiously from the slips as Hazlewood finds a lovely line, getting a bit of late movement into Stoneman's pads. The opener sways away from a short ball to end the over.

Pat Cummins has not bowled much in Tests because of his injury problems but he's got a huge reputation.

I've seen him bowl really well and he's got potential but I think the Aussie press has been over-egging it.

  6. Eng 34-1published at 12 overs

Pat Cummins continues serenly, hugging the off stump before he finally draws a false shot out of Stoneman. The batsman pushed forward and the ball took the outside edge of the bat, but it dropped just short of a tumbling slip cordon. The final delivery is speared in towards Stoneman's midriff, and he guides the ball away with a firm jab of the bat.

That cover drive is James Vince's favourite shot and if he picks the right balls to play then these Australian pitches should suit his style of play.

He needs the discipline to not throw his hands at everything.

    Hazlewood 4-1-19-0

It's a change of ends for Josh Hazlewood, with Mitch Starc sent to lurk in the deep somewhere. Stoneman plonks his foot down the wicket to his first delivery and drives nicely for another three. Hazlewood then stops a ball in his follow through and it lobs it at Vince, who had moved roughly half a centimeter to the side. The ball bounces through to Paine and umpire Erasmus has a word with the bowler. Vince, to his credit, turned his back to that, and he promptly cracks the follow up delivery away for four. And again, this time flicked off the pads and down to the boundary! Lovely work all round.

Theo HV: To put the mockers on this pair... Stoneman and Vince look very assured and calm at the crease.

Joe Butler: Stoneman and Vince handling the Aussie quicks well so far. With only 4 main bowlers, when do Australia get nervous?

  10. Eng 23-1published at 10 overs

    Vince 10, Stoneman 11

That's nice from James Vince, up on his tiptoes and guiding the ball through the off side. Two fielders converge on the ball as Vince and Stoneman nip through for a couple of runs. Cummins responds with a fuller delivery that gets bunted down the pitch. He's bowling nicely and he bangs down a short ball that Stoneman ducks under, loses his balance and takes a tumble backwards. It's well directed but actually, the keeper has taken that down by his ankles - it's hardly gone whizzing through to Tim Paine.

Mark Stoneman times the pants off a straight drive but Mitch Starc sticks a foot out and stops the ball going rolling down the ground. Starc gives him a sighter before sending down a short ball, and Stoneman, wisely, sways his nose out of the way. Another maiden.

Peter Eastwood: I'm too terrified to watch but equally too terrified to fall asleep.

Marc Sepetowski: I don't know if I'm letting the occasion get to me too but that's one of the best cover drives I've ever seen.

Ellie Mackin: What a way to start my birthday, tucked up in bed listening to great commentary from TMS.

  14. Eng 17-1published at 8 overs

    Stoneman 8, Vince 7

Here's Pat Cummins, looking so much like Freddie Mercury that it's actually distracting. Vince gets in behind his first delivery before clobbering a short delivery up towards Nathan Lyon. Cummins is such a talent. It's hard to believe this is only his sixth Test in six years. Say it quietly, but there's not much pace in this pitch. Cummins' short deliveries are sitting up nicely, and Vince gets in behind everything. A maiden.

James Vince has got all those shots in the locker but it's about converting those pretty 30s and 40s into something more.

  16. Eng 17-1published at 7 overs

Starc continues, James Vince's off stump in his sights. Vince ignores everything he can, before swaying out of the way of a short ball and getting another bit of verbals from Starc. The massive smile on his face sort of spoils things, though. Vince plays a straight bat to another inswinger from Starc, before the England batsman rounds off the over with a timely flick off the pads for one.

    Stoneman 8, Vince 6

Hazlewood keeps on going full and Stoneman clumps a drive away for another couple of runs. And that's four! Full and wide from Hazlewood and Stoneman goes for it, thrashing his arms at the ball and the ball goes whizzing through point. Hazlewood responds with a beauty that goes fizzing past Stoneman and into Tim Paine's gloves.

    Starc 3-0-8-1

Shot! England's first boundary is brought up by a delightful James Vince cover drive. It's full from Starc and Vince, maybe aided by a touch of nervous energy, frees his arms to cream the ball to the ropes. And Starc's response is one of those reverse swinging yorkers that Vince jabs his bat down on, and a thick edge falls just in front of the slips. Starc then batters down his first bouncer and follows it up with a verbal spray. The bouncer was going down leg and Vince was well underneath it, but it's law that you follow up a short ball with some muttering.
