That's how you get your wickets in Australia. The two ones that came into Cook in the other over set him up to push at that one.

There was good carry, good pace and first slip saw it all the way. What a wicket for Australia.

    Vince 2, Stoneman 2

Looking at the replay, that's a very good bit of judgement from Tim Paine, who stayed stock still to avoid distracting Handscomb at slip. But it's good bowling from Starc, making Cook play, although the England opener was a little wafty with the bat. Josh Hazlewood, meanwhile, keeps plugging away, finding some extra bounce, and Mark Stoneman turns a delivery off his hip just past Shaun Marsh at short leg. That's the Shaun Marsh who had a bad back yesterday. Being at short leg will do that the world of good...

Phil Rann: All going well for the first 15 balls at least.

George Davis: And so the long night begins...

James Vince is greeted by three slips, furiously clapping their hands in his direction. He gets off the mark to his first ball, flicking a leggy Starc delivery off his pads and away for a couple.

Here's James Vince. First Test batting at three. A current Test average of 19.27. I'm saying nothing.

It went quickly, the slips standing deep but Handscomb has caught it and that's a huge blow for England.

The keeper might have gone for it but credit to Paine for not diving across and making that difficult for Handscomb.

    Gone! Caught at first slip!

Mitch Starc makes Alastair Cook play but the ball swings late, and Cook can't check his shot. He pushes outside off stump, the ball catches the edge of the bat and flies towards Peter Handscomb, who takes a good catch at first slip.

A cautious, careful start but there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of pace so far.

  9. Eng 2-0published at 2 overs

Here is Josh Hazlewood, who doesn't seem to have gone for the moustache look, and his first delivery is a beauty, pitching full and whizzing over the stumps. Nathan Lyon, meanwhile, has wandered in to sledge Mark Stoneman. That's the off-spinner who bats at number eleven, sledging the opening batsman. It's not exactly Steve Waugh coming at you, is it? Stoneman ignores him and shoulders arms to a series of deliveries that hug his off stump, before rounding off the over with a defensive drive.

Nice little over there for England - a couple of sighters for Cook, who could get his head over the ball before getting off the mark.

But next is Cummins - who's been bowling absolutely lightning by all accounts.

Jonathan Agnew: Actually, it'll be Hazlewood.

There's three slips in place but no short leg as Mitch Starc comes steaming in to Alastair Cook. Ball and bat are finally introduced to one another with the fifth delivery, as Cook gets his foot plonked forward to a straight ball, before the first runs come from the final delivery of the over. It's straight, Cook topples over slightly, but his hands are soft to guide the ball through gully. We're away!

The first ball of the Ashes has been bowled! And, er, it's a nice delivery that hugs off stump, goes through to Tim Paine at a decent height, and swings a tiny bit.

    As you were.

Cook paws at the crease, marking his ground as Mitch Starc crouches down, staring down the wicket.

Cummins and Starc are just going to go fast at England - heads, shoulders, nose and toes.

There's blue skies above the Gabba now as Australia huddle beyond the boundary rope. Plenty of bum pats and hand rubbing and nervous fidgeting - especially from Nathan Lyon -before Steve Smith leads his players out.

Mark Stoneman takes a final slurp of water as he and Alastair Cook wait just in front of the tunnel. Cook, leaning on his bat, looks utterly unfussed by things.

I'm going for a 2-2 scoreline - a draw here in Brisbane and then two wins each, meaning the urn is retained by England.

Australia's anthem is an absolute belter. They're 1-0 up without a ball being bowled, although England get bonus points for Joe Root blasting out God Save The Queen with impressive gusto.
