Dawid Malan looked to be struggling against Nathan Lyon but he dug in and helped wrest back a bit of initiative for England with Moeen. It's been good for England to see batsmen score runs that weren't Alastair Cook or Joe Root.

Jonathan Collard: Player of the day was clearly, and surprisingly, Vince. The Aussie attack was supposed to crush our top order but they didn't. Gives us some hope for the series.

England's James Vince, speaking to BT Sport: "The pitch was easy-paced, I stuck to my gameplan and there's lots for me to build on.

"The match is pretty even, I reckon. The pitch might quicken up in the next few days and runs will be easier to come by."

Mark Stoneman on Test Match Special: "Speaking to the groundsman here, the feedback was there was no turn at all. So it was encouraging for Lyon to get some quite prodigious turn at times

"It's a bit to do with the moisture in the pitch and once it dries out it'll be interesting to see how the ball reacts when Lyon comes back on tomorrow

It was a pretty solid contribution from myself, I would've loved to have more but I think that partnership with me and Vince frustrated Australia for a long time.

"They were chopping and changing their bowlers so we knew we were doing our job, even if we weren't getting completely away from them on the scoreboard.

"I absolutely loved it - making my Ashes debut at the age I am (30), I'm just trying to take it all in and enjoy myself.

"We just want to bat and bat and bat and try to get a foothold in the game."

Peter Parkin: Why such negativity on #bbccricket, external? "Falter" "England slip". Best part of 200-4, not a bad knock, come on please be more positive!

Because they did slip a little from the position they were in. Anyway, don't you have to go and team up with the rest of the Avengers?

Number three is a really crucial task in this England line-up, but James Vince has stood up. England will be sitting there feeling pretty happy with themselves.

Cheers Jack - have a good kip.

Evening, I mean morning (if you're on this side of the globe) Saj Chowdhury here.

So this section is a bit like Apprentice: You're Fired, Xtra Factor 4 (?!), Star Trek - the Bit After etc etc - minus the studio audience.

We'll be reviewing the first day's play at the Gabba, which began well for England and ended well for the Aussies.

We want your thoughts, about the cricket preferably.

    • Who was your player of the day?
    • Your play of the day? Lyon's throw to run out Vince?
    • Predictions for day two?

    Entertain me.

The sugar and adrenaline are starting to wear off so it's probably best I sign off for the day.

The early relief are in and I'll hand you over to Saj Chowdhury to bring you up to speed if you've not long woken up.

If you managed to stay with us all night, I salute you. Thanks for reading and I'll be back in later this evening (yikes) for what is set up to be a terrific day two.

    Laters.

  10. Close of play - Eng 196-4published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

    Malan 28, Moeen 13

Whose day is that in the end? It's very much in the balance.

England fought well after the early loss of Alastair Cook and were definitely on top at tea.

That stunning run out of James Vince and Pat Cummins' beauty to remove Joe Root probably swung it back Australia's way.

But Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali have battled brilliantly to the close, surviving a couple of close calls and refusing to completely shut up shop.

    Simon Mann
    BBC Test Match Special commentator

That's a little bonus for England - it's nine balls with the new ball they don't have to face. Dawid Malan has done well to get to the close.

  12. Bad light stops playpublished at 80.3 overs

    Eng 196-4

Salt in the wound of that lost review - umpire Erasmus immediately invites the players to leave the field as bad light stops play.

Steve Smith remonstrates but the umpire is having none of it. The whole of the field is shrouded in shadow and the floodlights have been on for a fair while.

Handy that for England, they only had to face three deliveries from the new ball.

  13. Not outpublished at 80.3 overs

    Eng 196-4

Australia lose a review as the ball is found to have been sliding past leg stump.

It didn't look to have swung at all in real time, which it needed to do in order to clip the stumps. A good decision from umpire Erasmus.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Starc goes full at Malan's pads and gets it through the batsman's defences.

Umpires Erasmus again says not out. Steve Smith uses up almost all of his 15 seconds and elects for the review.

    Think it's going down...

  16. new ball

New ballpublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Steve Smith does elect to take the new ball, trying to nip out another England batsman before the close.

The hosts have two overs to do it in - the first of which will be bowled by Mitchell Starc.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

It's beautiful bowling from Lyon, he gets over-spin and bounce on the ball - not just turn.

  18. Eng 196-4published at 80 overs

    Run rate 2.45

Lyon to continue - the new ball will be available after this over and then there will be two overs left in the day.

The fourth ball is a beauty, drifting in and turning sharply past Moeen's outside edge. The Aussies half-appeal for caught behind.

Eek, there's another, Moeen prodding forward and lucky not to nick off. Bat on ball in defence to finish.

  19. Eng 196-4published at 79 overs

    Malan 28, Moeen 13

Out of nowhere, Hazlewood applies some late swing to a yorker that Malan does well to dig out.

More menace now than in the whole of the second session but Malan assuredly survives, showing good awareness of where his off stump is as he leaves.

A short ball to finish and Malan crisply pulls it away to the fence. Lovely shot.

Moeen has an uncomplicated way of playing. He accepts that and if it's his day, he gets the scoreboard moving along quickly.
