    Lyon 23-8-40-0

Lyon hangs a ball outside off and Moeen goes to hit the red off it, misses and there's a strangled appeal from Paine behind. Always fun when Moeen is at the crease.

Calmer stuff from Moeen in reply as he plays out the remainder of the over.

I think that was going down leg stump; a little bit of seam or swing.

  3. Eng 192-4published at 77 overs

Moeen on the drive against Hazlewood, picking up a single in the covers.

The camera pans to James Anderson in his pads. It seems Jimmy has been bestowed with the 'honour' of being the nightwatchman should England lose another wicket this evening.

    He looks thrilled...

...oh, could he be out there soon? Hazlewood gets one to rap Malan's pads and there's a hearty appeal. Umpire Erasmus says not out and no review from Steve Smith. Good decision - it was pitching outside leg.

Cummins is duly removed from the attack and Hazlewood returns.

That second new ball is due in four overs but not sure the Aussies quicks have the energy to take it.

Nathan Lyon looks more threatening than the fast bowlers at the moment, meaning Australia might wait until the morning for the new ball.

  6. Eng 191-4published at 07:56 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

    Malan 24, Moeen 12

Eek, a Moeen drive drops just short a fielder close in at cover. Lyon twirls away again but Moeen plays him watchfully in response.

Lyon then drifts onto the pads and Moeen clips away a single.

Skull: I don’t want to jinx Moeen, but I think we’re in for a Moeen special in this Test match. He’s going to play a crucial part in this game.

You wonder if five overs is Pat Cummins' limit.

  9. Eng 190-4published at 75 overs

Shot! England refusing to be cowed late on day one as Malan tucks into a Cummins half-volley and drills it for four.

Another lovely shot from Malan, clipping off his legs through wide long-on for back-to-back boundaries.

A diving stop from Warner prevents further damage but Malan and Moeen have put on 27 off 25 balls so far.

    Cummins suddenly looking very tired.

  10. Eng 182-4published at 74 overs

    Malan 16, Moeen 11

Another couple to Moeen, who's prepared to play positively against Lyon.

Eight overs remain in the day.

  11. 6 runs

Eng 180-4published at 07:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Lyon misfields a Moeen drive but the England man doesn't take the single on offer - a touch of nerves perhaps?

Will Moeen attack? He will when he can, sweeping a full ball forcefully away to the fence.

Hang on, that's gone for six! Remarkable power from Moeen, crashing a flat maximum.

  12. Eng 174-4published at 07:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Moeen off the mark with a flick away off his pads for three.

Cummins striding purposefully to the crease now but Malan rides the bounce to defend well.

The number five then unfurls a terrific cover drive, the ball racing away to the fence.

Malan then misses out on another as he can only guide a low full toss straight to mid-off.

Thomas Measures: Why do I have the feeling that we are going to end up being bowled out for less then 250?! We are going to struggle now unless someone can get a 100.

  14. Eng 167-4published at 72 overs

    Malan 12, Moeen 0

Lyon continues to test and tease. I do wonder if England could've got after him a bit more earlier in the day, before he started to find this turn, though the offie has bowled really well for no wicket.

A rare loose one slides down leg and Malan flicks it to the fence for a boundary, just past Paine behind.

Having seen Pat Cummins first-hand, you can see why the Aussies rate him so highly.

Moeen Ali, come on down. A huge innings for England's latest number six.

He survives the last two balls of Cummins' over.

A terrific inswinger to get Root, that. This day could yet swing firmly Australia's way.

That's a huge wicket - it was hitting middle and leg. It makes you wonder why Erasmus didn't give that out straight away. Perhaps he thought there'd been an inside edge?

Root lbw Cummins 15 (Eng 163-4)

It's in line, fine for height and crashing into leg stump - England captain Joe Root has to go.

The pitch has quickened a tad in the past hour or so and Pat Cummins finally finds that pace he's been lauded for in the build-up.

It's a tremendous delivery, angling sharply back in to Root and beating him for pace.

It looked out in real time, with Root caught in a horrible position and perhaps surprising Erasmus didn't raise the finger.

That looked quite straight to me - but was it going down the leg side?
