  1. Eng 153-3published at 63 overs

    Root 14, Malan 1

Starc strains for the inswinger but strays onto Root's pads and the England captain clatters it away for four.

Oh heck, Root pulls loosely at a short one but sees his top edge fall just short of deep fine leg.

In with the Barmies. There's Charlie Chaplin, Bo Selecta's version of Mel B and the Queen. They are singing a rude song about Matilda.

    Hazlewood 16-4-46-0

Hazlewood continues to probe on a decent line and length but nothing too scary for Malan to deal with as he carefully and confidently plays out a maiden.

Hats off to the selectors for picking Vince. Easy to slate them when they get it wrong, so worth acknowledging when they pull it out the bag.

    Root 9, Malan 1

Starc now but the foot-holes are causing him more problems than he's causing the England pair at the crease.

A single for Malan to get off the mark.

Here comes Dawid Malan on Ashes debut - but it'll be Joe Root to face next.

The England captain adds a couple more to the score. He has a crucial role in negotiating his side to the close unscathed now.

That's wonderful fielding from Nathan Lyon - a pick up and throw with one hand. The crowd absolutely loved that. Great credit to Lyon.

Vince 83 run out (Lyon) (Eng 145-3)

It's an easy and quick decision for the third umpire.

Vince knocks it into the off-side and calls Root through for a single, it's close to Lyon, bounces up invitingly and the off-spinner snaffles it and whips off a majestic throw.

What a way to go after such a terrific knock. But more than matched by a terrific piece of fielding - to get that throw off at such speed and with such accuracy is tremendous.

Well batted, Vince. He'll be gutted, a century beckoned.

Oh my! James Vince is gone. They've sent it upstairs but the number three looks to be a yard short of his ground as he's run out brilliantly by Nathan Lyon.

Root won't be hanging around if he gets in - he likes to dominate bowlers.

    Vince 83, Root 7

Another deft drive from Vince sees him jog two before he works away a low full toss out to deep point for a single.

Starc to have a go at Root - oof, a decent cherry pushed across and beating the outside edge of the captain's bat.

Steve Smith uses that as inspiration to bring in a second gully but Root calmly bats back the final ball.

  15. Pint-sized Starcpublished at 06:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Here's our first pint-sized TMS offering of the winter - Alastair Cook the unlucky subject as he is removed for two. That seems such a long time ago now.

  16. Eng 142-2published at 58 overs

Captain Root complies a couple of twos as England continue to accumulate well.

That ground tamper-downer is now out applying some pressure to the pitch near the crease.

  17. If you're just joining us...published at 06:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Hello if you're just joining us - top line is that England are doing well.

Alastair Cook edged off early on to leave England on 2-1 but Mark Stoneman and James Vince accumulated expertly to take their side to 59-1 at lunch.

The latter is looking in very good touch, his exquisite cover drives helping him to reach his maiden Test fifty, although he has survived being dropped by Tim Paine off Nathan Lyon on 68.

Stoneman grafted and grounded out his second Test fifty, compiling a century stand with Vince before he was bowled by Pat Cummins on the cusp of tea.

And that takes us to Vince and Joe Root out there now...

A tea-time stroll reveals queues at the bars are not lengthy. One reason could be the price of beer. $7.90 (about £4.50) for a glass that is only two-thirds of a pint.

  19. Eng 138-2published at 57 overs

Starc bowls again and again umpire Erasmus asks to check the ball. It looks like that last Vince boundary ended up in the stands and a photographer had to retrieve the ball for Hazlewood.

Doesn't seem to be anything untoward that went on but Erasmus is animated about it.

The umpire is now signalling to the stands that he wants one of those ground tampers out in the middle.

The groundsman comes out but Erasmus now signals him off. All very odd.

  20. Eng 138-2published at 56.3 overs

    Vince 80, Root 3

Vince chases a wide one from the returning Starc and it clatters along the ground through the third or fourth slip position to the fence.

Starc goes straighter but Vince leaving well before the Aussie quick goes too straight and England's number three flicks him fine for another four. Vince onto 80.

What's this? Umpire Marais Erasmus is demanding the ball from Steve Smith to have an inspection.
