Essex and England Lions batsman Tom Westley, speaking to TMS: "It was an amazing experience to play those Tests in the summer. If someone offered me what I'd achieved this year - wins for England and Essex winning the County Championship - then I'd have definitely taken that.

"The bitter disappointment of not getting selected for the Ashes tour is not nice but I have to deal with it and it's something I have to go through to become a better cricketer."

Our man Stephan Shemilt is currently on TMS, bringing you a series of chats with some of the England Lions, who are also in Australia.

First up, is Tom Westley who was dropped after a series of low scores against South Africa and West Indies this summer after a solid start to his Test career.

Ian B: Constant examination of Australian technique by English bowling today has been exemplary, relentless.

Ben Fides: Absolute masterclass from Anderson & Broad. Sleep is needed, but not really an option when these two are on song like this!

Cheers Amy. A well-deserved pizza break.

Tough to call what's been the best session of this Test so far but the one just gone is a contender.

A fascinating battle of wits between Smith and Root, Broad and Anderson underlining their brilliance and a match still in the balance.

Do keep listening to Test Match Special over the lunch break - they've been chatting to the England Lions, who are out in Brisbane at the minute.

There's a pizza with my name written all over it, so I'm off to enjoy that. Jack Skelton will take you through to tea.

Roz DeKett: "The 12th man has run out and given [James Anderson] a tablet." Thought you meant an iPad for a moment. (Maybe you did? In Philadelphia, trying to visualise.)

(I like the idea of this. Just watching a sneaky film on the iPad during a long day in the field.)

That's a really satisfying session for England. They've not got rid of Steve Smith but they've got three at the other end.

Steve Smith scored 17 runs in that session from 66 balls. England bowled excellently at him, and Broad and Anderson were superb with the new ball, but Anderson's discomfort is a worry.

Broad, meanwhile, carries on his merry way and sends down a short ball that Cummins sways to avoid. Cummins has a very nice defensive technique and Smith wanders round to punch gloves as the two do a bit of gardening. Top notch time wasting tactics. Joe Root then deploys the Yorkshire Wall - a series of catchers in front of the batsmen - to keep Cummins in check, but he sees out the over.

And that, my friends, is lunch.

Annie Smith: Left the club on a night out to listen to the cricket.

    Priorities in order.

    Smith 81, Cummins 2

Anderson jogs in for a chat with Ball, who gets a delivery to shape back into Cummins. Cummins pushes rather awkwardly at it and Ball fielders in his follow through. Anderson doesn't look particularly happy - nothing new there, admittedly - but he's still on the field. He was holding his left side with a bit of a grimace earlier on. A short ball to Cummins rises, and he drags his bat out of the way in the nick of time, before he plonks the ball down the field for a single.

There's just under 10 minutes to go for England - but it won't be James Anderson to bowl this next over. The 12th man has run out and given him a tablet. That's a worrying sign for England. It'll be Jake Ball instead.

The inswinger first up to Steve Smith from Broad, and he pushes it away for a single. Smith has scored 17 runs today. That's to England's real credit with their fielding placements and the way they've bowled at him. Pat Cummins is looking to score but Dawid Malan, lurking in the covers, whips out two fine, diving stops to keep him on strike. Cummins does get off the mark, though, with a turn of his wrists, and Smith slaps a drive up to the fielder.

Chris Watkins: Wonderful!! Last night flicked TMS on and two wickets in five minutes, had to apologise. Tonight, flick it on and wicket in the first over... this time in our favour! Redeemed, you’re welcome everyone #mockers

Adam Hawker: How many of Jimmy's 500+ wickets have been that exact delivery? Perfect line and length, little bit of swing. Genius.

    Smith 80, Cummins 0

Smith jogs through for a leg bye so Anderson will have one delivery at Cummins, who calmly defends it.

Oooh. Anderson deceives Smith with an inswinger - the Aussie captain shoulders arms and the ball raps him just above the top of his pad.

England go up for lbw but it's given not out - surely going over. And the tourists duly decide against reviewing.

It was about this time yesterday that Australia were running through the England lower order, that the home fans were demanding blood and the Gabba became the Gabbatoir. Now? The Aussies lean back in their seats, barely uttering a word to one another. The noise comes from the pocket of the Barmy Army in section 31.

Broad has Pat Cummins in his sights, and he goes fuller straight away. Cummins plonks his foot forward and blocks, his elbow nice and high. Broad tinkers with his field, bringing Chris Woakes forward, but Cummins has a nice defensive game. Maiden.

  19. How's stat?!published at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

James Anderson (508) and Stuart Broad (391) have taken a combined 899 Test wickets.

James Anderson to Steve Smith. This is what you want to see. A bit of extra bounce takes Smith aback, but he's stoic, staying on the back foot and getting in behind Anderson's delivery. There's the inswinger from Anderson but Smith is equal to it, clipping it off his pads, and Anderson keeps Smith quiet with another good length delivery that Smith can only push to a fielder.
