This is the fourth time Pat Cummins has bowled as many as 40 overs in a first-class match. In his first season of the Sheffield Shield, he bowled 65 and 67 overs in two matches. The only other time was on his Test debut at the Wanderers, where he bowled 44 overs.

So Cummins into the so-called red zone - nothing doing off the first four balls as Bairstow calmly defends.

A solid back-foot punch off the fifth brings no run. And the last is nicely defended too.

    Two consecutive maidens for Australia.

Pat Cummins is now into his 40th over of the match. Mitch Starc has bowled 39 overs. The biomechanist in the England camp reckons if you bowl 40 overs, you go into the red zone.

Lyon to Moeen - four sedate balls before one goes on the arm and Moeen edges it off the pad to where short leg would've been.

That's the benefit of Moeen's attacking approach to Lyon, the field having dropped deep to cut off the runs and Moeen can get away with a mistake.

Woakes is going to be key for me. He got out poorly and naively in the first innings to Lyon, but he can bat.

Pat Cummins to bowl from the other end - stifled appeal third ball as he gets one to jag back into Jonny Bairstow's pads. Inside edge and/or going down leg though.

The lanky Aussie quick drops short and Bairstow cuts deftly through point for four.

Cummins is not keen on that and a bouncer duly follows but it's way down leg and Bairstow ducks it easily.

Another down leg and England's keeper flicks it fine but doesn't pick up four, Josh Hazlewood cutting it off to keep it down to two.

Nathan Lyon to bowl after lunch - a big spinner first up that Moeen Ali avoids.

Second ball is a beauty. Unplayable. Fizzing off the pitch and taking a piece of turf with it as it whistles past the outside edge. Promising signs for Moeen when be bowls perhaps?

Third ball - Moeen attacks and thwacks it away over mid-wicket for four.

It's all go. Shot! Moeen now sweeping confidently away to the fence. A leave to finish. England's lead now up above 100.

    A huge session awaits.

Chucking out time at the pub/club/house party? Didn't manage to sneak a peek at BBC Sport while you were out? Here's what you missed...

England resumed on 33-2 at a half-empty Gabba and Australia were a bit flat, with Joe Root and Mark Stoneman accumulating nicely.

But Nathan Lyon had other ideas when he came on - producing two great deliveries to snare Stoneman and Dawid Malan, both left handers hesitantly prodding forward and caught at first slip.

Root and Moeen Ali steadied things for a while, the England captain reaches 50 - only to depart the next ball, plum lbw to Josh Hazlewood.

England on the ropes at 119-5 at tea, a lead of just 93.

Joe Root has only scored one century in the second innings in Test cricket. He has now scored 16 half-centuries in the second innings.

Just been rifling through the stats to try and bring you some crumbs of comfort to go with whatever snacks you've chosen to help get you through the night.

The highest successful chase ever at the Gabba is 236-7 by Australia against West Indies in 1951. England need to find 143 runs for their final five wickets to post that target.

Hmm, maybe not so comforting, given they lost their last five for 53 in the first innings.

How about this one? James Anderson averages 14.63 in Tests in 2017. Hope that shoulder really isn't causing him any trouble.

Jack Mendel: Concern for me is whether Moeen could be a match-winner with the ball, like Lyon can be. Moeen certainly didn't bowl very well in the first innings. Looked very flat. Not spinning it very much. Bowled too short and too quick.

    Cheers Amy, sterling work.

Well then. After two days and one session, honours were very much even, but Australia have now been on top for three straight sessions and it looks like that will see them claim this Test.

Eat well, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow. A huge task awaits you after the resumption.

That is Australia's morning. England have scored relatively freely in the context of the game. Perhaps two wickets too many though.

England added 86 runs in that session for the loss of three wickets. Moeen and Bairstow are applauded by assistant coach Paul Farbrace as they leave the field, while Australia saunter off looking pretty chuffed with themselves.

Jonny Bairstow gets off the mark with a flick through midwicket, before Moeen leaves a delivery that just misses the top of his stumps. Nathan Lyon will get a lot of praise, and rightly so, but Josh Hazlewood has been very good. He's the less vaunted of the Aussie pace trio but he's been the pick of them in this second innings. Warner scampers around like a puppy to cut off a push down the ground from Moeen, before Bairstow gets underneath a bumper.

And that, friends and cricket lovers, is lunch.
