Oh! Moeen's not having much fun out there. He gets squared up by Mitch Starc, the ball goes off the glove and falls agonizingly short of a diving Steve Smith. Smith went like Superman to try and catch that. He had to leap in front of Peter Handscomb at first slip, and he was so close. But Moeen was just stood there. No foot movement, nothing. This is really tense now for England as Moeen chips a delivery just past short leg, before Joe Root hammers a pull down and nearly gets caught by Starc in his follow through. Starc follows it up with another short one, Root pulls and it goes for four, but it didn't miss the stumps by much.

Mark Stoneman and Dawid Malan particularly have problems facing Nathan Lyon because they don't cause him any problems. They're not proactive or getting after him.

Ooft! Oh, Moeen gets greeted to the crease with a magnificent delivery first up, a ball that turns and just ripples past the outside edge! And again! That's fine work from Lyon, and he gets an ovation from the Gabba crowd as he wanders down to the deep.

That's a classic off-spinner's dismissal to the left hander. As we feared, Lyon is causing problems on day four.

    Caught at first slip again!

Nathan Lyon has been so important in this Test. He brings Dawid Malan forward, the ball takes the outside edge again and Steve Smith doesn't miss a beat. Two hands down low scoop the ball up.

England's lead is still just 48. Joe Root needs a mate to stick around with him.

    Root 33, Malan 4

Mitch Starc is coming on for another blast. Joe Root can stay camped on the back foot, and on two occasions he cracks big drives towards two fielders. He might feel a tad unlucky there. Starc slides a delivery down leg and Root gets a tickle on it for a single, and he heads for a mid-pitch conflab with Malan. Malan takes his advice on and works a ball that's coming into his body away for one.

England have not taken enough risks against Nathan Lyon - they could use their feet more.

    Lyon 8-1-14-1

That's so good from Nathan Lyon, getting a delivery to spin past Malan's outside edge, before Malan cracks a lovely cut away for one. Root then gets down on one knee and sweeps, and sweeps hard, for one. That's a little more positive against the spin from England.

Joe Root has been having a bit of treatment during the drinks break. You do often see him getting a bit of back treatment on the field. Pat Cummins continues and has a brief lbw yelp against Root, but there was a fair bit of bad on that, I'd wager. It did square Root up a touch though. Malan lets a short delivery nip across him, before taking the short ball on and pulling the ball down for a single.

Nathan Lyon is enjoying his best ever year in Test cricket, in terms of wickets. A couple of tours of the sub-Continent has helped admittedly.

Dawid Malan gets off the mark with a dance down the pitch to Nathan Lyon and a gentle push to mid on for one. Joe Root then goes with the spin to work a leisurely single.

The drinks cart is about to come on, which signals the end of the big first hour. That's what it's officially known as.

That's where Steve Smith was leaving it. Joe Root doesn't want to leave it, he wants to feel bat on ball.

Hello. Pat Cummins whizzes in a bouncer to keep Joe Root circumspect, while Mitch Starc goes through some stretches in the deep. And there's the edge! Root pushes at a wide delivery from Cummins, going hard, and the ball drops just short of Steve Smith at slip. Root looks instantly irked with himself. He shouldn't have played at that. Cummins responds by going short and Root tries to pull, and ends up swishing at fresh air. This is not the time for England to lose their heads.

Australia have woken up, now, as Usman Khawaja comes haring round to stop a cut from new man Dawid Malan. Lyon rounds off a tremendous over with a delivery that goes straight on and bounces past Malan.

Nathan Lyon bowled so well in the first innings but couldn't buy a wicket for a long time but that's a key dismissal.

Exactly what England didn't want having got the scoreboard ticking over. It's edged back Australia's way.

    Gone!

Good bowling from Nathan Lyon is rewarded as Mark Stoneman presses forward, the ball takes the edge and goes towards slip. It's Steve Smith - who else? - that's stood there and he takes a good, low catch to dismiss Stoneman.

    England are, effectively, 36-3.
