Ooh, I wouldn't do that, Joe. A fine short ball from Cummins comes Root's way and he attempts the same sort of hook that caused Cook's downfall yesterday. His eyes were slightly closed and he just lost sight of the ball as it went over the top of his bat and through to Tim Paine at head height. Root has a quick word with himself before another flick off the pads brings a single, before Stoneman shoulder arms and gets struck on the elbow by an increasingly fired up Cummins.

Australia need to be careful here because if they over-attack they could leak runs everywhere and that will be perfect for England. This pair have started to get the scoreboard ticking over and that's something we've not really seen in the first three days. This is just the start England wanted.

"Bowling!" whines Tim Paine as Nathan Lyon continues, and Joe Root gets off strike with another clip. He was very keen for two there, Root, but Shaun Marsh did well to come round and cut the ball off. Stoneman shapes for a drive, sticking a foot down the wicket, but changes his mind at the last second, and Lyon's eyes light up. He goes a bit quicker, and Stoneman defends.

About to board a flight from New York to Heathrow. 6h48m flight time I’ve been reliably informed so (not really) expecting to land and see the Aussies a couple down for not many trying to chase 280 odd.

Pat Cummins is bowling into that crack (see 12:20) which is right outside Root's off stump. Root negotiates it well, plonking a foot down the wicket and driving, before adding a single with a gentle push and run.

Oh! That's so close for Australia! Cummins induces the drive out of Stoneman, getting him to push away from his body, and the ball flies just past Khawaja at gully. Khawaja went flying to his left but he just couldn't get there. It's a boundary, though, and Cummins registers his displeasure with a short ball to end the over.

I'm told that one of the reasons for the small crowd is because day four is not pre-sold. Apparently Brisbane doesn't attract huge crowds for other Tests and that they often close the top tier of the ground.

A huge cheer of "Garry!" goes around the Gabba as Nathan Lyon comes skipping in. There's some definte turn there for Lyon, as a delivery bounces past Stoneman's off stump, but Stoneman can play it comfortably from inside his crease. Oh! That's a cracking cut from Stoneman, targeting the one loose ball in the over, but it goes straight to the waiting fielder. A maiden.

    Root 22, Stoneman 23

Lawrence Booth, the erstwhile Wisden editor and journalist, has reported that Moeen cut his bowling finger, external during play yesterday. Not ideal, for a spinner. Cummins draws a leading edge from Root first up but soft hands keep it rolling along the ground, before Root bounces on the back foot and drives to keep the strike rotating. Smith instantly packs the leg side field for Stoneman, who lowers his hands to the inevitable short ball, before he drops a delivery past short leg and runs.

England have just got to keep knocking each of their bowlers out of the attack, one by one.

  13. Eng 53-2published at 22 overs

Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon are limbering up for a bowl, as Starc floats a gentle delivery into Stoneman's pads, and he pushes it away for a single. Root then hops onto the back foot and shovels a single away. Hmm. Starc doesn't look particularly pleased with his lot, here. It's not been his most accurate spell, nor his most threatening. In fact, it's been a bit of a nothing opening start from Starc. That's better, two short balls that go across Stoneman, but the follow-up ball is too straight, and Stoneman blocks.

This is very good from Josh Hazlewood. It's line and length, to use an old cricket cliche, and Root gets squared up by an attempted cutter. He plays it with soft hands, though, and the ball rolls towards gully. That's a fine move by Shaun Marsh - not the best in the field, at times - as he goes running to his left and cut off a thumping drive from Root. A very good maiden from Hazlewood, as Root wanders down the pitch to do a bit of gardening.

Starc has got a short leg in and two men out for the hook shot, which screams hello, short ball. Oh, no. It's a full ball from Starc and Stoneman jogs through for a leg bye. Into Root's body goes Starc, but Root drops the ball down and a quick call sees him and Stoneman nab a single. That's very good running. Starc bends his back and puts all his frustration into a short ball that sails past the off stump, and Stoneman all but turns his back to it.

    Root 19, Stoneman 20

Into the body goes Josh Hazlewood, getting a delivery to rise up to Root's hand, and the England captain jabs his bat down quickly. Hazlewood is bowling a good line here, forcing Root to play, and Root blocks, his elbow high and his head down. Shot! That's short from Hazlewood but not short enough, and Root rocks back to cut him to the boundary. Some lovely control on that shot from Root. He played the ball down and right between the slips and gully. Hazlewood tries to do what he did in the first innings and trap Root on his crease, but a flick of the wrists sees Root work a full ball off his pads.

Lots and lots of empty seats at the Gabba, far more than this time on any other day. Remember seven years ago, when England batted through the final day to a virtually empty stadium? It may only be the Barmy Army that witnesses England's glorious victory on Monday...
