Given not out on the field. But it looks like a tiny mark on hot spot and a bit of a spike on snicko. This should be out.

Starc puts Broad in his crosshairs, the England bowler defending well before he nibbles at a full one angled across.

Paine catches it and appeals. Oh, they're going to have a look. Did Broad get a feather on that?

Jake Ball is off the mark, but he doesn't know anything about it.

  5. Eng 195-8published at 70.2 overs

Jake Ball the new man in. Will Mitch Starc go yorker or bouncer? Bouncer it is and Ball flinches away, clipping it over the slips and just short of the third man that Bairstow picked out.

It's fair to say Ball didn't enjoy that. But somehow he's off the mark.

You have to give credit to the bowler for going round the wicket. It's disappointing for Jonny. It's like catching practice.

Bairstow is hanging his head. As a captain, you give yourself a high five. The trap was set. All those plans England set for Steve Smith, he ignored them. England have fallen into nearly all of them.

Oh Jonny, what have you done?

The trap is so obvious. Australia spread the field and put third man in a catching position. Starc bangs it in from round the wicket and Bairstow tries to ramp him over the slips - only to spoon it straight down Handscomb's throat at third man.

Dearie me. Bairstow looking to create width to what was a pretty straight delivery. No need to try to score like that just before tea. Is that the game?

  9. Eng 194-7published at 70 overs

    Bairstow 42, Broad 2

Bairstow drives Lyon square and is happy to take the single, giving Lyon a potential four balls at Broad.

The first is slid down leg, Broad flirts with it but it just clips the thigh pad as Paine snaffles it behind.

Solid defence from Broad to see off Lyon. Should be just one over until tea for this pair to negotiate.

Steve Smith has taken four catches in this innings. No fielder has taken five catches in innings in an Ashes Test.

Seeing the wicket of Woakes again, he tries to drop his hands at the last moment but the length has caused him to jump and with both feet off the ground, he's not in control of the shot.

A sterling catch by Smith as it threatened to die on him, the Aussie skipper can't keep himself out of the game.

Although he has withdrawn himself from the attack - giving Lyon the chance to bowl at the left-handed Broad. Shrewd move.

Stuart Broad is being called a rude name again...

Oooooh. Starc goes full at Broad, looking for the yorker and the new man does well to clip it away for one.

Shot! Bairstow stands tall to punch through the covers for a scrambled three. That brings Broad back on strike but he also stands tall to dab down a short ball, scurrying through for a single.

Bairstow to face the last and he rises with the bounce to work Starc away through the covers for another quick three. Terrific batting from England's wicketkeeper/last hope.

You get a short ball and instinct is to play it. It looped at him slower and he couldn't stop himself from trying to play it and block it. It was a loopy catch, too. There was no pace on the ball because Starc had banged it in so slow to get it high. This Kookaburra ball, when it is old and soft, makes it damn difficult to get people out.

Do the crowd boo? You bet.

Big test to get through to tea with Bairstow here.

That got a bit bigger on Woakes than he thought. Rather then letting it go by, his hands and wrists went up. It went surprisingly slowly to the Australian captain.

Gone! Just as Woakes was looking in good nick and Starc was looking on the verge of breaking down, the latter removes the former.

Starc over the wicket, angling it across and it leaps up at Woakes, who tries to get on top of it but can only nick it with the top edge of his bat as Smith takes a fine low catch at second slip.

The Aussie quick looked a million miles away from taking a wicket in this spell but gives a timely reminder of his skills to reassert his side's dominance after a lull.

If we can hold on to these two until new ball is due then lead could be 200 plus and then hopefully some quick runs off the harder nut could see us to a competitive total here. Here's hoping.

Smith tosses up a pretty rank full delivery outside off but Woakes can only pick out a fielder in the deep and jogs one.

Bairstow then turns the Aussie skipper round the corner for another.

Woakes plays out a tidy end to the over. A real scrap out there now.
