    Bairstow 33, Woakes 16

Starc now goes round the wicket to Woakes, who's calmly in behind. A bit of a grimace from Starc there as he walks back to his mark. He's certainly not bowling with any real venom.

He goes wide on the crease but sends the ball down wide and Woakes cuts him away nicely for four. Woakes looking more fluent the more balls he faces after a nervous start.

A nice back-foot punch then brings him one and a frustrated Warner (he is ever anything but?) shies unnecessarily at the stumps but someone is backing up.

Starc then bends down to grab his ankle. Something definitely not right. But he's got enough about him to send down a 90mph ripper into Bairstow's mid-rift.

No sign of Warner on to bowl yet as Smith continues. Nice bit of drift and bounce but Woakes rocks back to cover up.

The Aussie skipper then strays down leg and a nice glance from Woakes brings two, the lead up to 150.

A pie to finish but Woakes misses out, only grabbing a single on the pull.

The other bowler that can potentially bowl a bit of leg spin is David Warner. He can bowl some medium pace too.

  5. Eng 174-6published at 65 overs

Superb scurrying from Bairstow, who doesn't quite get enough of a cut shot off Starc to find the fence but sprints the first to ensure he gets back for the second.

Starc bends his back in response but it's pretty woeful, well wide of the stumps and Bairstow leaves well alone.

Better next up - a straight bouncer that Bairstow has to duck low under.

Yeesh, Starc hangs a short one outside off and Bairstow shapes to flick it over the slips but misses. Bit of chirp from Starc, but he's been all over the place since returning.

    Bairstow 31, Woakes 8

Smith's first is short outside off and Bairstow cuts it away for one.

The next few are better but Woakes is happy to defend before driving for one.

Smith then drops the ball in his run-up, before finally completing the over, Bairstow nabbing another single.

And here is Steve Smith into the attack to bowl his leg-spin.

It's fair to say that since coming into the team as a bowler who could bat a bit, he's much more the latter now.

Still, when everything else you've done has gone so well in the match, why not?

Uninspiring return from Starc, flinging most of the over well outside off from over the wicket at the right-handed Woakes.

He overstretches too, conceding a no ball. Down the left, now down the right - Woakes chases it but gets out of the way as the ball flies past leg stump to Paine behind.

Straighter to finish and Woakes just taps it away.

Mitchell Starc to re-enter the fray. He's wicketless in this innings and has looked short of his best.

Instead it's Nathan Lyon who has been England's tormentor-in-chief at the Gabba of all places.

Can England's off-spinner Moeen Ali respond in kind when Australia bat?

Lyon removed his counterpart in controversial circumstances just now, but not before the two had a bit of a stare down...

    Bairstow 29, Woakes 7

Bairstow nabs a single off Lyon before Woakes nearly turns him to short leg but it falls just short of Bancroft.

A smattering of singles off the over follows, each one greeted of a cry of "Oh!" from the Aussie fielders.

Good diving stop from Usman Khawaja at gully to prevent another Bairstow boundary as Hazlewood strays wide.

The next is into the pads and Bairstow can dab it away for one. Maybe two? No, they settle for the single.

Woakes wafts a bit at a short one to finish, fortunately playing over the top of it.

This pair have made just nine from 46 deliveries, the Aussies turning the screw.

    Bairstow 26, Woakes 5

Bairstow goes back very deep in the crease and briefly threatens to steer Lyon straight to a close fielder. He survives though and is on the drive to pick up one.

"We're on here," drawls an Aussie fielder as Woakes faces Lyon. Nothing doing off the last two balls of the over though.
