  1. What have you missed?published at 05:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

A reminder for any of you just waking up that Joe Root won the toss this morning and chose to bowl. Not many of you getting in touch have been impressed by that decision but the England skipper hasn't been helped by his bowlers in the opening 13.5 overs.

    Thanks Amy.

Not your fault but that session was thoroughly frustrating. England bowling too short and two rain delays.

Anyway. Hopefully we'll be back under way again in just over five minutes and the tourists will come out a team transformed.

  3. Teapublished at 05:31 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Tea has officially been taken at Adelaide, with Australia on 33-0 from 13.5 overs.

It's a 20-minute interval so, all being well, play should resume at 05:40 GMT. Provided there's no more rain, that is.

It'll be Matt Henry to take you through tea and beyond. In a bit, folks.

  5. What's the fuss about a pink ball?published at 05:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Glad you asked.

Peter Handscomb, who made his Test debut in Adelaide against South Africa in last year's day-night affair, says a brand new pink ball swings but that the lights don't make that much of a difference.

"My feeling was that when the lights come on, all it does is liven up the grass on the wicket. How much the ball will react depends on how much grass is on the wicket," he told BBC Sport in August.

"If there is a bit more grass on the wicket, the night-time conditions will come into play. If there is not a lot of grass on it, it's actually quite nice to bat against the pink ball under lights.

"A brand new pink ball is going to swing. You get a bit more seam movement and pace off the wicket. That can often be tough to face."

  6. Were England right to bowl first?published at 05:23 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

England have bowled too short. Whenever Anderson pitched it up Warner was tentative feeling at the ball but on the whole he bowled short.

He has bowled six overs for 11 runs with no wickets but he'd have been better going for 20 runs and taking two wickets.

Let's have some rain break reading to keep us all awake.

Now, this was written before today's Test started, but here's Stephan Shemlit on why England still have reasons to be cheerful.

There are an awful lot of people sheltering under the stands at the Adelaide Oval. It is horrible out there.

It had briefly stopped raining, which gave Jonny Bairstow time to pop out onto the field but, er, it's started again.

Geoffrey in sparkling form during the break. He's been going for about half an hour, all without sitting down.

  13. 'England are all over the place'published at 05:06 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Jim Maxwell
    BBC Test Match Special

Australia will be thinking that England are a boat without a rudder at the moment.

The tourists are distracted not only by their own form, or lack of it, but also the Ben Stokes saga.

They are all over the place after defeat in Brisbane, and their preparations for the second Test in Adelaide - a match they probably have to win in order to keep the series alive - are bound to be affected.

With England holding the Ashes, Australia have to win the series to regain the urn.

If they had some objectives before the first Test in Brisbane, then a number would have been fulfilled, with a little work still to do on others.

Read more from Jim Maxwell on how Australia's pre-series targets are going.

I don't think the intensity and passion is really there for England.

They have to match Australia and I don't think it is there. I am not saying they're not trying but it is too laid back for me.

Meanwhile, highlights of the 2010-11 match at the Adelaide Oval are currently being beamed out of the televisions. I hope they're watching in the dressing room.

Bowling first is fine if your bowlers are going to use the new ball well. And England haven't. They look a touch flat, to me, and they've not bowled the right lengths at Warner and Bancroft.
