The pitch isn't quick but I've seen enough that if you bowl full enough for long enough, things are happening. England can't allow one of those tailenders to hang around with Shaun Marsh, who looked fantastic. They need to get six wickets tomorrow very quickly.

The talk of wheels off will only go away if England win. If they lose here, there will be many more mentions of a whitewash. They allowed Australia into the Test - I don't think England risked enough in that first 10 overs.

  7. Bantzpublished at 13:43 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja was at the other end when England were trying to rattle Steve Smith with a few verbals. So what did he make of it?

"I honestly couldn't hear a lot of it. It's quite loud in the middle. I was at the other end and it looked like there was a bit of banter going on," he said.

"I thought it switched Smith on a little bit. I didn't know whether to let him go or bring him back in. He looked like he was enjoying being out there. We were getting a partnership and I was pretty happy.

"He was switched on, playing really good cricket. There was banter from both sides. It didn't seem to be out of the norm. The chat I heard wasn't too bad. It was good, old fashioned Test cricket. Entertaining. That's all it was."

  8. Crepuscularpublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

The first day-night Test has added a new dimension to the Ashes including the word crepuscular. Yes, that is a word.

It was used by Dan Norcross on TMS during the final session and, according to the Oxford English dictionary, means "resembling or likened to twilight".

As in "...peering through the crepuscular gloom" says the Collins dictionary.

Every day is a learning day eh. You might get some funny looks if you use it down the pub with your mates though.

I like what England did to Steve Smith. They disturbed him.

  11. Verbals between Smith and Andersonpublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Umpire Aleem Dar had to step in at one point to separate England bowler James Anderson and Aussie skipper Steve Smith as they exchanged a few choice words.

Smith seemed unhappy at Anderson fielding so fine at silly mid-on and forcing him to stand wider at the non-striker's end.

Steve Smith is exceptionally good. Outside of Don Bradman he is as good as anyone we have had for a long, long, time.

He is up there with the best.

Steve Smith was out for 40 but in doing so reached 3,000 runs as captain of Australia at an average of just over 73. Remarkable.

    Dan Norcross
    BBC Test Match Special

Steve Smith didn't look anything like as comfortable as he did in Brisbane. He played more false shots in one over off Craig Overton than he did at anything at the Gabba. That doesn't bode too well for England - the Australian bowlers will fancy they can get something else out of this pitch.

  15. 'He was saying I was slow'published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Craig Overton on taking the wicket of Steve Smith: "It was a pretty nice one, he's one of the best players in the world. Hopefully, I can carry on tomorrow.

"The plan was to go straight at him, we felt we could keep him quiet doing that. One beat him for pace and went on to stumps, I don't remember too much of it.

"He was saying I was slow, it was nice I beat him for pace. I didn't really say anything to him.

We're pretty happy. Felt like we bowled pretty well all day. We didn't quite get the rewards. We had a lot of play and misses. We'll come back tomorrow with a new ball, hopefully get a couple of early ones and we'll be right on top.

  18. Big man, big breakthroughpublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

Now back to the day's wickets. Craig Overton had come in for Jake Ball in England's only change after losing the first Test and what a wicket he picked up for his first in Test cricket by bowling Steve Smith.

The 6ft 5in Somerset seamer caused a bit of discomfort for the hosts without success in his first couple of spells.

But he came back on in the final session and bowled Smith with one that jagged back and caught the pad and bat on the way to knocking over the Aussie skipper's castle. He'll remember that one.
