On the whole, England did bowl better than they did yesterday. It just wasn't particularly effective. The ball wasn't doing that much, James Anderson started off bowling too short and they just didn't look like taking a couple of quick wickets and swinging things back their way. There were also two reviews that went against England. Had they stayed in England's favour, Andesron would have taken two wickets in seven balls, and things might have looked a tad different.

It certainly isn't so bad that they couldn't have got out there and played. England will be delighted they didn't have to face those overs tonight. Australia were bowling the kind of length England should have bowled. Joe Root will get criticised for his decision at the toss, but I'd like to know why England bowled so short.

Australia's Shaun Marsh on BT Sport: "To get over that 400 mark is a good day for us.

"It's an amazing feeling, to bring up an hundred in Ashes Test. To have my family here to witness it was pretty special.

"I've got a little boy now, so I get home from cricket and it takes my mind away from the game. I've just really enjoyed my cricket over the last little period."

All this negativity, this could be a positive for England. If England bat out the next two days and create a draw scenario, then that would be as big as a victory after the tour so far and give a much needed momentum boost to the team! You can never judge a game until both teams bat!

We'll have an early start again tomorrow to make up for the overs we've lost. Play will get going at 3:00 GMT. Get the coffee pots on.

England go into day three just one wicket down. Which, given that we knew they'd have to face the big quicks under the lights, isn't bad going. It's just a shame about the 442 runs they conceded beforehand.

I bet Steve Smith's a bit miffed. He declared to get 20 overs at England, and he's had nine before the rain turned up. Mind you, Mark Stoneman must be annoyed as well.

That, I'm afraid, is that for the day. Rain ends play early.

England end the day on 29-1, trailing Australia by 413 runs. Alastair Cook is on 11, James Vince is yet to score. Australia, meanwhile, are off on autograph duties.

The umpires have just gone out for a look, and Aleem Dar has given someone a thumbs up after they'd had a look at the pitch. I have no idea what that means, which I admit isn't very helpful.

The Australia players are gathered just beyond the boundary. Josh Hazlewood is posing for selfies with some excited kids, while Nathan Lyon has a little chat with them. David Saker, meanwhile, is having a bit of a debrief with Steve Smith. That rain delay came at a nice time for Smith and Mitch Starc. It's given Starc the chance to have a breather after his opening overs and freshen up for another spell...

It's stopped raining, and the super sopper is whizzing around the ground. We should have some play very shortly.

Don't think England picked the right players in the first place. Dan Lawrence, Nick Browne, Rory Burns and Liam Livingstone average over 40 in Division One. When we lose the Ashes, get them in!

We've been having a debate in the office about the 'gap' between these two teams. There is obviously one but I don't think it is that big. It's just Australia are in the ascendancy at the minute and, as such, England's fragilities are always going to look that bit worse. England's bowling is a worry, though. It's so samey. There are times when you look up and you generally can't tell if it's Woakes, Ball or Overton that's running in. They're crying out for a bit of something different.

The key will be Alastair Cook. He has to withstand the storm that will come from the trio of quicks. While he's out there, the dressing room is a calm one. If Australia knock him early, that will send a few judders.

Ah. That cover appears to have come back on while we were looking away. It is very dark out there, which will make things even more fun for England's batsmen.

England women's captain Heather Knight on Joe Root's decision to bowl at the toss: "I think it was a brave decision. Looking back it might not have been the right one but the bowlers didn't back him up. It was a brave decision because Joe knew if he didn't get it right he would get stick so credit to him for that."
